Dr. Dre to debut radio show 'The Pharmacy' as Apple Music exclusive on July 4th
Rap mogul Dr. Dre on Friday announced a Fourth of July debut of a bi-weekly radio show called "The Pharmacy," which will launch on Saturday as an Apple Music exclusive focusing on West Coast jams.
According to an Associated Press report, Dre's new hour-long show will start streaming tomorrow at 6 p.m. Eastern. It is not currently clear whether The Pharmacy will be a Beats 1 radio segment or a standalone station available through Apple Music, though recent developments to Apple's music strategy suggest a Beats 1 debut.
Dr. Dre, whose real name is Andre Young, joined Apple after his company Beats was acquired for $3 billion in May 2014. Technology from the Beats Music streaming service, including human curated playlists, was subsequently folded into Apple Music, which launched Tuesday.
Digital live radio, specifically the 24/7 Beats 1 station, is being touted by Apple as a tentpole feature that sets Apple Music apart from rival streaming services. Helmed by DJ Zane Lowe, Beats 1 has already announced a number of upcoming shows hosted by celebrities, including Elton John and St. Vincent.
This will be the second exclusive from Dre, who earlier this week released his seminal album "The Chronic" for streaming on Apple Music.

He doesn't call himself pharmacist dre. Even with a degree as a "doctor" of pharmacy, he'd be referred to as a pharmacist.
But we both know that not the pharmacy being referred to.

Uh, not sure what the big deal is. The obvious analogy is that its a musical pharmacy- instead of dispensing pills, it dispenses music. The "hospital" sounds a lot more ridiculous, and the connection is a lot weaker. You go to the hospital if you're sick/injured, you go to a pharmacy if you need to buy stuff.
People can bitch about Beats1 Radio all day long, but the truth it is is something that will increase the evangelizing of Apple, and increase awareness of Apple to an even broader audience. Like everything Apple does, it will have a positive effect on the ecosystem and brand stickiness.
Why do I get the feeling we're going to see more and more announcements about radio shows from various artists/producers and others in the music industry? Every day it seems like there's something new. I think Apple wants to keep Apple Music/Beats 1 in the news during the first 90 days to really get people to tune in.
I like Apple Music and the custom playlists it's always showing me in For You. I've already heard some new stuff I hadn't before that is relevant to my musical tastes based on artists I've selected and my existing music. I'm interested in seeing how far Apple expands radio with new shows.

It's radio. Nobody cares about Clear Channel or Viacom. Considering you need an Apple product (be it iTunes or hardware) to use it, this is hardly going to 'increase awareness of Apple'.

Whether you like it or not, it will directly and indirectly increase exposure to the Beats brand, and Apple. All things considered, Beats1 is a net asset, and its existence is a good thing in many respects, and not a negative.

I don't think it's a huge positive either, but any value added is a good thing. So I guess we agree. As for music, from what I've heard so far it's rather diverse, so I'm sure something will be there that you like on occasion. Not like it's from one particular genre or anything.

Diverse is a good word for it. The only song I've come across I liked was Pharrell's Freedom.

Yes! Dre is short for Andre, and Dr. Dre sounds like Dr. J. I would doubt that the digital rectal exam existed when Dre adopted the name.
