<strong>Why do people expect Apple to give everything away free?</strong><hr></blockquote>
Maybe because of the incredible profit margin incredibly expensive machines Apple most certainly does not give away for free that are the price of Admission to the Mac community,
<strong>Apple make a big fuss about everyone having a <b>free</b> .mac.com account and now they want to charge extortionate amounts for it! They must be nuts...
This is an absolute joke...you can get web hosting with a gig of space for under $70 a year, so why go .Mac?!
Man this is lame...
Marcus</strong><hr></blockquote>
Hahahaha, try actually using that one gig of space to host stuff and see if they don't kick you out first.
The only thing I use iTools for is iDisk. I don't really want or need the e-mail accounts. I don't want or need the web hosting, unless Apple is going to also do domain hosting and let me run CGI and other active web content. I'm indifferent about the virus protection.
$100/year isn't too bad a price for all that's offered. The problem is I only want a small portion of it. iDisk alone isn't worth the price.
Truly sucks. I can't say that I don't understand the reasoning behind it, but it still sucks.
SO will we now have to spend the cash on email + webspace we don't use in order to, say, activate 1-click in iPhoto?
I understand the business logic behind this, and the reality of the disappearance of Free from the web. I'm willing to bet that no one would be pissed if there was a longer-term changeover... but the way this is playing out is actually worse than the MS rollout of services - at least you knew up-front that you'd be charged for it from MS.
While I can see them making iDisk a for-pay feature, I think they would be pretty freaking stupid to make the Mac.com email for-pay for a couple of reasons.
one is that you are supposed to use your Mac.com name with iChat, and what good is a pay-for IM client?
another is that there are thousands of users (such as myself) who use their mac.com email as a primary email address.
Now homepage, as nice as it is, I can easily see as a for-pay feature, as it sucks up the most bandwidth out of all of the features.
hmmm... i understand apple's stance on some of this. i bet they didn't realize the headache they signed on for when they gave away a free itools account to everone with mac os 9. plus, at least they might not have to hunt down every person who creates a temp itools account to host screenshots of unreleased apple software, etc.
but my wife and i two accounts, for our own respective home pages for vacation photos, etc. but we cannot afford $200 per year after this year, regardless of features.
oh, and apple has gotten everyone used to having mac.com email accounts. all my friends contact me through mine. now i either have to get a lot of "my email address has changed" notes ready, or pony up.
so why do we think apple has to give everything away free? we don't. but don't get us trained on a free product, and then pull the rug out and expect everyone to be happy.

i just thought about the iChat deal... that somewhat concerns me. but it's compatible with AIM and those accounts are free, so i don't really care.

I'm in the same boat. I put all my wedding pictures up on my iDisk and all our wedding quicktime clips up on my wife's iDisk.
100 megs of iDisk space....now can I run php scripts on there? Than it will be worth 100 a year.
<strong>Uh-oh. I predict my bitch thread will come handy
I actually think its okay. The 100 mb is a huge plus and I predict Apple is going to give us something that will intergrate streaming etc. with iTo... .Mac.
The name (despite i already hate it) show that Apple really think they can go head to head with MS and thats a good sign.
I´ll pay the 50 bucks the first year and reevaluate a year from now and expect them to have given me much more features during that periode.</strong><hr></blockquote>
Probably the best post in this thread (it matches a lot of what I would say ). As much as I think what they are currently offering is lacking I do expect Apple will use this as something to build on.

Ohh. The back-up feature looks spiffy.
And I have to add a line to my signature alone for the brushed metal look.

I don't need the extra storage (email or webspace). I certainly don't see the point of Virus software, especially on MacOS X. Weird.
And backing up 100MB to dot Mac? You have *got* to be kidding!!
Finally Apple is copying Microsoft...
The end is neigh!
The way I see it, I now have 60 days to finally start using my ISP's email and webspace.

You can use your existing AIM name with iChat or get a new one from AOL instead of using a mac.com name.
