Samsung said to debut Galaxy Note 5 in mid-August in race to beat 'iPhone 6s' publicity

Samsung rushed out their half-baked watch in anxiety of beating Apple's watch to the marketplace. Is this going to be a repeat of that mistake? Desperation can be a thorny motivator.

That would be great, but then we would see a Samsung commercial about how they have been doing it for years and show tweets from people who don't exist at how Apple is copying them. Same type of commercial we saw after the iPhone 6 Plus was released.

It'd be funnier to name it the iPhone 7 afterwards and see what they do to their numbering.

It's a shrug, as in "who cares" or "whatever".  Pretty sure Tim Cook literally shrugged at the sight of this news.

Getting the note one month early is not going to help them.

Samsung's problem is that they have zero brand loyalty. So when Chinese and Indian and other manufacturers started producing  "good enough" products Samsung started losing market share by millions and millions off units. Their profits are declining for 7 consecutive qtrs. If S6 and S6+ did not help them to rise , Note which is a lesser volume seller than S series is not going to help.

A major part of this lack of brand loyalty comes from their "F**K and FORGET" strategy for their entire phone portfolio excepting one or two flagships. They just sell the phone and move on. If you want the next Android version buy the next phone. No wonder they don't have any brand pull. As the hardware innovation dies out ,this is going to kill them.

Even in a fully matured smartphone market , Apple will still sell a lot of phones if not ever growing , but at least a VERY profitable 10-15% share. They are the only ones who have a brand pull. And only they have differentiation from the sea of android products and manufacturers who are rapidly racing to the bottom.

The phone hardware matured much faster than PC hardware. So how does Samsung differentiate next? 6GB - 8 GB RAM? 10NM-7 NM-3NM nodes ? 4K-8K-11K display? Samsung peddles incremental hardware updates without pausing to think if those are meaningful and if they can excite consumers to upgrade.

    Tough days ahead Samsung.

When Samsung's smartwatches failed their next big thing supposedly is "Internet of Things" , where the hype has gone ahead of the number of useful use cases.

Imagine waking up one morning to discover your Samsung smart refrigerator , smart microwave and smart washing machine animatedly downloading Samsung qtrly results and analyzing the reasons of Samsung's impending bankruptcy using big data.

Oh wow there goes Samsung again trying to beat Apple to the punch. It will come out no one will care and a month or so later new iPhones come out. Apple, as always will get all the press and fanfare.

Honest question. Do people even get excited about Samsung phones when they debut?

No, they thin they're Palm. Palm thought they were smart hitting the market just before Apple was planning to announce a new phone. Only to see themselves not even be a speed bump as people surged to Apple. Palm didn't even last out the year before selling themselves to HP.

Like someone pointed out in this thread, August is a terrible time to announce a product in the USA... In addition, August is when all of Europe takes a vacation...
Glad you brought up Europe. Places like Rome and Milan have whole neighborhoods that are shuttered for August. I'm sure Samsung will put up billboards on empty streets, especially if doing so 'beats Apple' in some weird way nobody cares about.

BFD. When will the Note 5 actually come out?

Last year, Samsung announced the Note 4 before the iPhone 6/6 Plus. Yet, the Samsung arrived more than a month after the new Apple models did. Even if Samsung announces in August, will the Note 5 actually be available before the new iPhones? I would venture to guess no.

Recall the Samsung commercial mocking Apple for being late with large screens?

And how it touted that with the Note 4 "The Next Big Thing Is Here"?

And then right below, the disclaimer pops up ... "October 2014"

Sure, they beat Apple to the punch by announcing the Note 4 before the iPhone 6/6 Plus. But, it was meaningless "victory" given that the Note 4 hit the streets after tens of millions of the new iPhones were already in use.

    Embarrassing.

If they release it before the next iPhone then it will be ignored because everyone will be waiting to see the iPhone 6s, and if they release it afterwards, then no one will care because the iPhone is such a media whore. Probably the best strategy for the most publicity would be to release it on the same day.

Samsung still pays students to astro-turf the web, eh?

The quality of their postings has declined dramatically over the years, though. They're scraping the bottom of the barrel with this one and not doing themselves a favor.

It's more like jumping in front of a speeding freight train.

Not having a removable battery I could live with as my phone gets two days easily without a charge but not having an SD Card, no way. I absolutely love having a 200 GB SanDisk card in my BlackBerry Passport. It's kind of nice having 150 movies at my disposal as well as my entire user directory.

Actually, Samsung is pretty good about releasing their phones after an announcement. That's about it though, the fact that Samsung has turned their head on their core customers by not including a removable battery or SD card will have devastating results on their sales. Especially when other manufactures are making better handsets for less. Anyone who chooses the new Note over say the new OnePlus Two aren't very versed in what's available. I hope Samsung gets a rude awakening over this.

The majority of flagship phones, from any manufacturer, don't have an SD slot, and it will become even less common. I can't even fathom why you would need nor want 150 movies stored locally on a phone, besides bragging rights. I can't even imagine WATCHING a full movie on a phone, unless I was REALLY desperate, like bored out of my mind on a plane. Not something particularly enjoyable. Definitely does not outweigh all the other disadvantages of using a blackberry.
