You don't need internet for ApplePay either, heard of the Watch?

I have. I have one. Apple's site says it has to be paired with an iPhone.

    700

That's where my confusion was. I have used it on Watch but not when I didn't have my iPhone with me.

I'm not saying iPods are crappy or not good or not important for some people.

All I'm saying is the world has moved on.

Apple sells 10 iPhones for every 1 iPod it sells.

You are the exception...not the rule...and that's OK.

Yes it does if you want to do ? Pay.
No it doesn't. The iPhone or ?WATCH side of the transaction has nothing to do with Internet connectivity. Only the terminal side. Touch ID and ?Pay info are locked in a box on the iPhone or without Touch ID on the ?WATCH and never communicate with the Internet for anything.

I am wondering with WiFi Calling, a would a 4G iPad + iPod Touch replaces an iPhone?
Either one can be used with the Israeli magicJack app for FREE for life. I've been using magicJack on all my iPads, iPod touches and even all the time on my iPhones for FREE for years. Best kept secret in telecommunications.

The chart is incorrect. Although the initial ?Pay setup needs pairing an ?WATCH with one of those iPhones, once the setup is complete, ?WATCH ?Pay in Stores works without the iPhone connected. All the ?Pay card info is in a Lock Box inside your dual core 1GHz ?WATCH Wrist Computer.??????

But the iPod family is certainly not dead selling 14M units last year.  Who cares if they sell 10x as many iPhones.  The iPod touch is not an iPhone.

I received my 128GB iPod touch this afternoon and ran Geekbench.  The app needs an update to properly recognize the new A8.  It reports the CPU as an ARM at 1.11 GHz and 991MB of Memory.  The scores are impressive compared to the old 5th Gen with A5.

    iPhone 4S A5 @ 800 MHz - single core 217; multi-core 409

    iPad mini A5 @ 1 GHz - single core 258; multi-core 494

    iPod touch A8 @ 1.11 GHz - single core 1,367, multi-core 2,445

    iPad Air A7 @ 1.4GHz - single core 1,477; multi-core 2,677

    iPhone 6 Plus A8 @ 1.4 GHz - single core 1,627; multi-core 2,915

Since I am using this as an iPod only for music, I immediately deleted Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, which gave back about 1GB of space. Those are the only pre-installed apps that you can delete.  The formatted capacity is 114GB, which gives you 112GB of available storage.  The iPod classic 160GB formatted capacity was 148GB, so it is a difference of about 36GB.  I still have 21GB available for new music.

You know. An iPod Touch could always be used as an iPhone. The magic of Continuity allows you to answer phone calls from your sexy thin iPod. Imagine those stupefied faces of your iPhone peers :)

Why would you do that? Well, why would you toast your brain with a bunch of iPhone antennas? Answering phone calls while leaving your iPhone in the bag is a no brainer for those concerned with radiation issues. And, you only have to upgrade your cheaper iPod every now and then because your (iPhone) antennas will work just as fine.

So, for those craving for a 4 inch iPhone. This is a sexy workaround.

The Apple Way, use 2 devices to do the job of one.

Nope, I'm sorry, not my problem, but your mistake. How you perceive it doesn't matter. It is what it is, and to be a good a product, it needs to be all of what it is. Its an iPhone Accessory. Thats why it Requires an iPhone.

This isn't a debate. You trying to make a point about why you think the Apple Watch is just fine with 1/10th of the functionality the shipping product boasts is completely irrelevant. Apple does NOT ship the product you think is adequate, so NO, you don't have a case for why iPod touch or even iPad should connect to Apple Watch.

I have always owned Touches and wifi iPads, never owned a smart phone.  iPhones are terrific but there is nothing about owning a smartphone that is a necessity for me.  As the payer of a family of 4 (including my eldest's iPhones for years, so I'm plenty experienced with them) the difference between paying for a data plan and not paying for it is enough over time.   Between my wifis at home and at work I'm nearly always capable of doing anything I need to do online.  Living in NYC is different than being in the suburbs or rural, so I can walk outside my door and get free wifi on every block, some times 3 choices, and should I be walking in Manhattan you can include all major retailers.  It would be harder to be somewhere where you *couldn't* get free wifi than where you could around here.  If someone needs to get ahold of me immediately or while I'm on the subway texting my dumbphone is plenty.  What a smart phone offers that I can't do with wifi I don't need, and I don't want the pleasure of my every move being logged even when I'm not taking advantage of it.

I periodically check with my wireless provider (Verizon) to see how to break it down better and even last month it came down to being worth it if I wanted to have it, not if I didn't.   I don't desire to be hooked up and online at all times.  When I'm driving I consider that time between being online and I value it.   I don't zombie down the street staring at a screen and I don't pull up menus of a restaurant I'm a block away from.

If one already has wifi all around them all day, to me having an iPhone is a bit like having a better home theater system with more features than what you're using now.  If that is a plus for you it's a great time to have one, it's not expensive.  But I simply have no attraction to that. The lack of GPS, which I have a fine working $75 one in my car, or taking body stats when being active, which I laugh about as it would only be a non-productive distraction for me (and the old, cheap pharmacy pulse and blood pressure devices, one trick ponies that they are, still work great four years later) are simply not factors for me.

Wow, best post I've read in weeks. I agree on everything you mentioned here (except I don't live in NYC, but do have wifi available 95% of non-driving time). I really have no interest in a "smart" phone with a voice/data $plan$, but I have an iPhone which I can use just like an iPodTouch. Now that the new Touches are out, I'm considering whether it's worth upgrading.
