Samsung takes on Apple's iPhone 6 Plus with 5.7" Galaxy Note 5, S6 Edge+

South Korean electronics giant Samsung on Thursday officially unveiled its new jumbo-sized Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+, a pair of 5.7-inch handsets designed to compete against Apple's smash hit iPhone 6 Plus.

The Galaxy Note 5 is an evolution of Samsung's popular Note range, keeping its predecessor's large display while packing it into a thinner package. The S6 Edge+ is a scaled-up version of the S6 Edge, which launched earlier this year and is said to be the more popular of Samsung's twin flagships.

Both new smartphones sport 8-core Samsung Exynos chips, 4 gigabytes of RAM, 16-megapixel rear cameras, and 5-megapixel front cameras. The rear cameras can now capture 4K video, and stream live to YouTube in full high definition.

The Note 6 and S6 Edge+ will be available in either 32- or 64-gigabyte configurations, and neither will ship with a memory expansion slot.

"At Samsung, we believed in the promise that big screen smartphones could actively address some major consumers pain points by providing users with a better viewing experience and more productivity on-the-go," Samsung Mobile chief JK Shin said in a release. "With the launch of the Galaxy S6 edge+ and Note5, we're reemphasizing our commitment to bold, fearless innovation that meets the needs of our consumers."

Samsung has yet to reveal pricing for either device, though both will be available in the U.S. on Sept. 21. Color options for the S6 Edge+ include black and gold, while the Note 5 will come in black or white.

Wrap it all the way around the back, then the top and bottom, so that its entire surface area is touch screen. That's innovation. /s

Welcome regional "segmentation". The Note 5 is not available in most of Europe, the Edge 6 is not available in the US ?

According to a review of the Edge 6 on a Dutch website, the Edge 6 has 4 GB DRAM, but the OS Samsung software takes up to 2.1 GB.

In other news, Telecom in Germany already allows you to reserve the 6S/6S ....

Utterly lame announcements. Still using the same Exynos 7420 (when people were swearing up & down the Exynos 7422 "Apple A9 killer" was going to be out). All they did is release a bigger, mildly tweaked version of the S6 and added another 1GB RAM to help run that horribly in-efficient OS.

Can't wait to see Samsung fans try to spin this in a positive way.

Wouldn't it be interesting if Apple completely changed the naming scheme for iPhones? Say, something like the Apple Phone Sport, Apple Phone, etc. What on earth would Samsung do then for phone names?

Bit larger phone doesn't mean bit better. I would not advice anyone to pay any attention as iphone 6S just around the corner.

Designed to compete against? It's just a size.

Designed to look like? Well, yes, but that's not new.

We know the answer to that hypothetical. Samsung would change the names of their devices to Sport, Phone, etc.

No, I think it has a digitiser for the pen.  Wired asked Samsung why they didn't do the S6 Edge+ with a pen and they replied they could, but it would be $1000.

This is a really tiresome meme.  Samsung have been using Plus with various models since at least the S2 and probably before.  They really should pare down the range of phones they make, it's utterly bewildering and confusing.  They should have 6 phone models at most, not 36.

I can't believe that there are millions of people out there that buy these cr@p phones. Worst OS.

They were apparently making 56 models last year. So, if they've cut it to 36, that progress! <img class=" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

It's called throwing Sh!t at a wall to see what sticks. But as usual sales will tank and Samsung fanboys will try to bash Apple any chance they get.

The iPhone6 is selling for $650.

Amazing that a 4 month old phone is already discounted 11% while the 1 year old iPhone is still $650.

    Pricing power.

FanDroids on this site were arguing that this is typical of Sammy knockoff phones, that they usually update models this soon and that "Apple does it tooo!"

    So full of ***.

Other than the edge thing, what's the difference and why do they need two models?

So they've removed the SD card slot and shrunk the battery!?!  And the Note 5 isn't coming to Europe!  Way to screw your customers Samsung!  So how many 6S Pluses will Apple now sell?
