New Cinema Display?

I am seriously considering buying a 22 inch cinema display, the only question i have is that they have been out for a while now and I was wondering if anyone has any insight as to wether or not t Apple is planning an update in the near future.. possible increase in screen resolution?? Size.. etc... any info would be great. Its a beauty to see that thing up close.

A 24" with a porpotionally increase in resolution has been rumored for a while now, it could come out in March at MW Tokyo or July at MW New York.

Perhaps, but KidRed is right (and I know he's not just saying that because he just bought one!

) The ACD is still far ahead of most everything else out there. Even if Apple (or someone else) comes out with something a little bigger, those 22 inches will still be a huge amount of viewable real estate.

What type of TFT screen the ACD has ?

IPS , super IPS, MVA or classical TFT ?

MVA are supposed to have all the advantages together.

I wonder if Apple will release a display that has some untried technology. Nanomirrors, baby! Or plasma. Or... I dunno. Sometthing futuristic. Maybe Apple will sell the first Holobox. A real-time updated 3-D Macintosh interface. You can manpulate it with your figers.

next update to cinema display is going to be a 1920x1200 23" 16:10 panel in more or less the same style enclosure. For those worried about DVI's ability to drive that res, don't. DVI goes to at least 2048x1536@60hz, with bandwidth to spare. I don't have the link handy but you can read it in the spec's PDF. curiously most vid cards don't go higher than 1600x1200, but that may be an issue with the use of only three channels (as per an older but compatible signal spec) DVI has 6 channels, it just a question of using more of the bandwidth. Since few LCD's go beyond that right now, few vid card makers probably see the need to spend working out any possible issues above that res.

Nice one Matsu, I found the spec and your'e right; dual TDMS channel DVI will go up to HiDef (1920 x 1080). That'll be useful for all those 'Shake' compositors

I think you are correct on the screen prediction... fits right in with the coming Apple "Hollywood" phase.

Also found out that the second connector on the GForce 4Ti card coming our way is a DVI-I connector which also carries analogue VGA. Essentially you can plug any sort of monitor onto the second output. Cool card.

Oh...since Apple actually designs these cards using nVidia chips, a 2 x dual channel DVI arrangement shouldn't be a problem.

The Cinema Display ADC is fabulous and a great companion to a Cube; with the new PowerMacs it would be great as you hook it up with an LCD too! If you are buying the whole thing later this year, might as well wait a bit, if you can hook it up tomorrow, I'd say do it. :cool:

Two questions:

1. WHEN do you think Apple will update it's LCD display line?

2. WHAT other size displays will we see and at what resolutions?

RailheadDesign.com had a few predictions back in December about a 19" display that we would see "sooner than later". Personally I'm in the market for a 19" widescreen LCD display. So let's toss that into the list and see what we can come up with.

Do you think Apple will update all its displays at once, or one at a time?

How long has the current display line been available, and based on Apple's product lifelines, when might we see updates?

So far I've heard:

23" Cinema Display (16:10, 1920x1200)

19" Cinema Display (16:10, ????x????)

17" Studio Display (4:3, 1280x1024)

My beige 17" AppleVision has been good to me, but she's on her last leg.

Any thoughts??

Angryman, I too am considering a Cinema Display, but I am playing the waiting game right now. It's not easy....

Thanks for everyone's imput... mainly what I am curious about is wether or no there will be a bump in resolution on the 22inch 1600x1024 is good but I was wondering if it was gonna be increased, also if there is a 23 or 24 inch im sure its gonna be mucho money... Ill probably wait a little bit for the tax return to come in and by that time hopefully there will be more info or price decrease.

I bit the bullet and bought one of the first Cinema Displays. Paid through the nose for it, even though I really couldn't afford it. I've never regretted it, however. Looking back, I wouldn't have wanted to wait for the price drops.

There was some info at xlr8yourmac.com a month or so back about a possible 23" Cinema Display. It was a press release from Phillips (believed to be the make of the current 22" CD) stating they were releasing a 23" model that could fit the same casing that their 22" model fits into.

I don't know of anyone else who makes a 22" LCD other than Apple, so it seems reasonable that the 23" display will be made for Apple.

I wouldn't venture to guess a release date.

The original cinema display was launced at the same time as the first G4s, and cost $4000 or more. For this reason I think we'll see a new cinema display when we get the G5, with a bigger size, higher res and styling to match the G5 look. I'm not hazarding a guess at when the G5 will happen, though (I hoping, and it needs to be MWNY, but MWSF '03 looks more realistic).

i really don't see a need for a new display to be released immediately. so apple could sit on it until the g5. i'd hardly call their displays, especially the cin display, antiquated.

While 16x10 is a better proportion (Golden mean), why wouldn't Apple make the displays closer to HDTV's and film's 16x9 proportion? I guess maybe the menubar makes up the difference.

I paid a lot, a very, very big lot, $3999 when I had used my 15" with my Cube/500. I knew in a flash that the ability to have two or three open windows across for editing, to zero in on Japanese or other complex fonts, and then watch DVDs in Cinema mode would be something I would be happy for if I could ever get it paid for. It has been a joy. I am now looking forward to the day when I can even set it up with both the LCD displays!

But I am afraid that will be good way down the road, since I'd have to get a PowerMac G4

24" is pretty cool and all, but I'm interested in a 19" widescreen.

When do you think we'll see LCD updates.

My guess is that Apple will release new displays for Valentine's Day because I'M IN LOVE WITH THEM.

Seriously, I could hump one of those Cinema Displays.
