everyone keeps talking about the soho mac store or whatever. i know it is all glass and pretty and in new york, but what does the word "soho" mean? is it a nick name for new york or something? obviously i missed the boat here!
In a business sense, you're right about it meaning "small office / home office."
In relation to NYC, SoHo stands for "SOuth of HOuston street." It runs west to Sixth Ave and East to Broadway, and south to Canal St. It was, in the past, a largely industrial area but is enjoying a renaissance as both an "arty" and a yuppie retail mecca.
2. SoHo - pertains to a part of Manhattan. It is short for South of Houston St. (pronounced Howston in New York, not Hewston as it is inTexas). Manhattan has a lot of 'areas' such as TriBeCa which is Triangle Below Canal, and Dumbo which is Down under Manhattan Bridge overpass. Also not to be forgotton is Alphabet City which is on the lower east side where the streets have letter names and Hell's Kitchen which is a section in midtown West of broadway - it's a fairly nice area now, but it didn't used to be.
SoHo is a very cool, hip, trendy, artsy area - lots of art galleries, restaurants and retail shops. People walking around all over the place.
SoHo also created a trend of other cities doing the same sort of lame-ass contractions.
SoDo (Seattle) - South of the Dome. Of course, they blew up the dome, so now everyone says it means 'South of Downtown.'
SoMa (San Francisco) - South of Market Street. Trying hard to be SF's SoHo, all re-purposed industrial and warehousing.
The best one I've come across, however, is:
SoWeBo - Southwest Baltimore. The 'Bo' comes from the fact that 'Baltimore' is historically abbreviated 'Balto.' for reasons that escape me. Also a repurposed industrial area that is now the arts and culture center of B-town.
Soho (spelt just like that) is an area of London with lots of nice cafes and sex shops.
