Rumor: New display with Force Touch could make 'iPhone 6s' slightly heftier

A leaked display component purportedly destined for Apple's next-generation iPhone has been measured up and comes in heavier and thicker than its counterpart in the iPhone 6, suggesting that the addition of Force Touch might make the "iPhone 6s" bigger than its predecessor.

The part is "slightly thicker" than the iPhone 6 display assembly, despite being glued together rather than using mechanical screws. As noted by MacRumors, the newer component also weighs just under 2 grams more despite lacking a front camera assembly.

The iPhone 6 unit weighs 49.4 grams with camera attached, while the one supposedly destined for the iPhone 6s comes in at 51.2 grams sans camera.

Aside from the construction differences, what appears to be a new-to-the-iPhone chip is seen protruding through the display's rear shielding. Speculation around this chip centers on Force Touch, as the new technology could require a dedicated processor.

Other changes, including a redesigned and integrated home button and Touch ID sensor, remain the same as previous leaks.

The new iPhone is expected to bring an updated A9 processor, along with 2 gigabytes of RAM and a possible 12-megapixel rear camera in addition to Force Touch. Apple is likely to announce its latest lineup on Sept. 9.

And I would be totally ok with a slightly thicker iPhone 6S.

If it could mean bigger battery, and removal of camera lens ring, I'm totally onboard.

This is no big deal. I actually expected Force Touch to bring with it some thickness. That's fine

If Apple don't want to move base 16GB model to 32GB than at-lest add 32GB back and price it half between 16 and 64GB.
    16GB - $649 (2 year contract -$199)
    32GB - $699 (2 year contract -$249)
    64GB - $749 (2 year contract -$299)

I bet that will push 16GB buyers to 32GB easily and Apple don't loose anything other than more happy iphone buyers/users.

There will always be leaks. It's impossible to prevent them. Plus, what does it matter to you?

I wouldn't mind it weighing twice as much if they'd just finally stick a good battery inside. The lack of rumors regarding battery size combined with their history of using tiny ones is making me sad.

IIRC. They replaced the 32GB with the 64 at the same price point.

Why would 64gb give a better experience than 32 gb. iOS software is the same irrelevant of storage capacity. iCloud storage makes it easier. I have 64gb currently if 32gb comes in at same 16gb price point then I'll be getting back on the 32gb bandwagon.

At some point(may be 2016 iphone 7), Apple have to make 32GB as base model irrespective of how efficient IOS becomes and apple expands more iphone app/data back up to icloud. Those millions of iphone users who need more storage, they will use icloud backup no matter how much base iphone memory provided because they need lot. For the rest, extra base memory is happy thingy.

Many of other smartphones in upper spec/price range already moved up base from 16GB in last two years and memory prices are falling continuously with higher capacity, low power consumption, faster speed, etc.

It is more space which means more apps and data on the device!

IOS is the same the user experience isn't. The same thing goes for RAM.

I'd be the first to admit that it doesn't make much difference to me on iPhone, on iPad it is a totally different story. 64 GB ought to be the base configuration on iPad.

ipad has become not only content consumption device but part computing device like running microsoft offce to create documents. So, certainly 64GB is desirable. Now a days, due to better camera in iphone, we stop carrying other portable camera and we use iphone exclusively for photos, videos and on top apps and game's storage footprint has increased than before so moving from 16GB to 32GB is natural. it has become need than want.

Can you explain to me why we need an option $50 more than the 16GB model? Why not one $50 more than the 64GB, with 96GB, too?
