I have have felt that begging and waiting for content from status quo networks was the wrong way to go about it. New content is always king. But I think Apple is better off encouraging new content creators and giving them a great forum. Producing content themselves seems kinda crazy. Just create the Internet framework for the big screen, but leave the content creation to others.

If Apple is going to back up the truck for someone it should be Jon Stewart. Have Jon head up a new, legitimate, non-political party offiliated news network. Jon would be on air in some capacity. He's one of the best interviewers in the business. Go get Jon. This would be the foundation to draw subscribers and build a new network/original programming.

    My dream: Joss Whedon

With his commitment to The Avengers done, a partnership with Apple Studios -- with him having full creative control of his material -- would be a welcome return to "the small screen" for this creator of Buffy, Firefly, and other shows.

I suspect Clarkson would probably not be a good fit for Apple; he's liable to say something that irritates someone.

At least he only punches men in the face.

Sure, why not. Netflix programming has proved that if you own the distribution medium, you can be free of the horrid world of network broadcasting and actually make something good. I'm not saying that all Netflix original programming has been good, but it has the potential to be.

Well, Steve told him not to do what he would do, and Steve would say no, so...

I was going to ask why that matters, but then I realized your point. ;)

    • HomeKit

    • ResearchKit

    • CarPlay

    • ApplePay

    • Partnership with Cisco

    • Partnership with US military in wearables space

    • Apple Store redesigns (and expansion in China)

    • Campus 2

    • New ?TV with SDK

    • Possible iPad "Pro"

    • Project Titan

    • And god knows what else that haven't been rumored about

I think Cook needs to start saying no. When there's too many irons in the fire you end up with a lot of stuff but not a lot of best in class stuff. I don't think Apple needs to get into the content creation business. They just need to be the platform that everybody wants to be on.

But maybe this is just Apple using its cash to buy up exclusives. I'm not really a fan of exclusives but that probably wouldn't be as much of a resource drain as Apple getting into the original content business.

As a counterpoint, people keep complaining Apple is a one trick pony (iPhone).

Great idea. I would also float buying 21st Century Fox. Gives you access to TV, movies, original programming, sports, etc.

it would look just like their commercials.

Just like that surf commercial. Sponsored crap.

At Least HOC didn't use paid Apple endorsements. It was an art direction choice..

Probably way off what Apple is actually doing. At least I hope so. It would probably be a world of hurt dealing with content partners and producing its own content.

If Apple really wants to get into the content creation business, buy Nintendo and make first-party exclusives.

I love the show, and love the guys, but my bet is they're PC guys. Just a guess.
BBC is basically PC, so yes.

I think what they could be doing is producing movies that are released directly to iTunes.

it took them a while to figure this out.. they should have done this long ago

More and more market frangmentation. So the poor suckers (us) end up having to fork out more and more each month to get all the Progams we want to watch.

I know that I won't sign up to NetFlix, Amazon Prime etc. This includes any Apple only channel. Why? I'm close to retiring and my income will naturally drop. $9.99/month for this, $9.99/month for that and it all soon adds up to a lot of money. My neighbour dropped her cable subscription recently and saved close on $120/month. Over the course of a year it all adds up.

Can I be made to change my mind?

If someone was to offer a service without any advertising then I might sign up. The current number of adverts on US TV make it unwatchable in real-time.

    Edit to add the below

Now with the news that NetFlix is droppong thousands of titles we risk even more market fragmentation. Epix probably wante more money than Netflix was willing to pay or Epix are going to start their own streaming service in the near future. YASVSS, Yet another Stupid Video Streaming Service. How many can the market take? IMHO there are already far too many.

For sure. And they will come in sports, stainless as well as rose gold ;)

This is how I imagine Samsung’s children’s programming would look.

And that's what I hope for: a service that has access to any streaming service and it not organized by channels. I want to see show xyz I can see it, no matter who originally hosts it. And like with music, I like specific songs, sometimes an album. I don't go out and rent out a genre channel just to hear that one song/album.
