Apple releases 8th developer, 6th public betas of OS X 10.11 El Capitan

Developers and members of the public who are beta testing OS X 10.11 El Capitan can now download the latest pre-release builds of the forthcoming software update on the Mac App Store.




Identified as build 15A279b, El Capitan beta 8 is also available through Apple's official developer portal. The software is meant for developers looking to test the operating system, and is not meant to be run as the main partition on a Mac.

For members of Apple's public beta program, a new sixth build is also available to download through the Mac App Store.

The new betas arrive less than two weeks after the seventh developer beta and fifth public beta were released.

Apple has a media event planned for next Wednesday where it is expected to unveil new iPhones and a revamped Apple TV. If the company sticks to its usual release schedule, OS X 10.11 El Capitan will likely arrive to the general public later this fall

El Capitan will be a free upgrade for Mac users. It is portrayed as largely a polish of last year's OS X 10.10 Yosemite, but will gain a handful of key new features like Split View, an enhanced Mission Control, and performance improvements.

    I suspect there are no more iOS betas and that this may be the last or second to last El Cap beta before it's released the following month, if they keep their release patterns on the same cycle as last year.

    edit: Does anyone know a site that lists the beta release dates so we can see how much time between the last betas and the release of iOS and Mac OS X there typically is?

    That is probably true but i find El Capitan to be in better shape than iOS 9.

    Completely agreed. I find iOS 9 far buggier. Recently I went away and downloaded videos to watch on my iPad. In spite of more than two episodes being on there the app only showed the first two and I could only access the others through iTunes Store and purchased items, which showed Play. I alerted Apple weeks ago and expected to see a revision since. Seems a fairly fundamental glitch and there are plenty of others.

    Apple will probably not be releasing any more iOS 9 betas because they will have spent the last few weeks integrating the secret APIs that will be announced at the event, like Force Touch. As a user I have been very happy with the current iOS 9, but as a developer the current beta still has many issues and even some unimplemented features.

    Hopefully the private builds the company has been working on have fixed this, but it is going to make it almost impossible to submit my app at launch :(

    Thanks, but I'm not seeing any details about when each beta was dropped, only the final updates.

    Yep. I'm looking forward to more stability, improved performance and security and split view (too long waiting for this).

    This will be very good on my 4K display (split view).

    Kudos and thanks! They also link to the Wikipedia page that has the info they sourced it from.

    It's on par with the iOS 8 betas.
