For all the excitement around the iPhone and the Watch and the shiny new stuff, the Mac is still by far my favorite Apple product. If I was forced, I could cope with an Android phone, I can watch Netflix and stuff like that through the PS4, and I prefer my mechanical watch over the Apple Watch, but I could never switch back to Windows.
Mac OS upgrades always have some genuinely unexpected updates that make things just that little bit easier for you, and they always far outweigh the occasional problems I've found with them. Mac OS upgrade day is always an exciting day at my desk!
For those people here who have been installing the betas, are you satisfied that the lingering bugs have been squashed?
There’s a bug for me in bless that keeps BootChamp from working, which means that I have to perpetually run a GTX 980+GT 120 setup and switch between the cards if I want to use Windows.
But I’m a “nonstandard install”, so I doubt Apple will ever fix or change it.
As a maintenance release El Capitan will be a non event because it works pretty well. It tidies up a few frayed edges but the train wreck that is iTunes lives on in all it's bloated glory. How much longer can they keep plowing more and more features into the same app before they say enough is enough? I'm very unimpressed with the way it handles app specific passwords. It randomly pops up password dialogs but doesn't indicate which app is asking for your credentials. Really stupid. Other than that it seems okay but unremarkable, which is a good thing for a change. It needed a tune up and not a redesign.
Unfortunately those enhanced feature apparently still don't include a decent, built-in spell checker, one whose lookup isn't worthless.
The developers of Hunspell, whose open source product Apple uses, don't have the funding for a decent, regularly updated and professional-done dictionary. The vocabulary is that of a college sophomore, at best. Being developed by Hungarians, it understands little about the rules of English spelling or hyphenation.
If spell checkers were cars, the one that Apple ships with OS X wouldn't be a Porsche or even a rusting Ford Escort. It'd be the infamous Yugo, which Time magazine rated as one of "The 50 Worst Cars of All Time." It is that bad.

I don't know of any time that I didn't have to be wary of applications breaking or possible bugs happening once the OS started being used by millions outside the development lab.
Probably not a good idea to install right away on a mission critical machine.

I tried installing the GM last weekend, only to have my late-2013 iMac essentially rendered catatonic by a kernel panic (or combination thereof) that I lacked the patience to track down. As eager as I am for some of the new El Capitan features, I may have to wait for the 10.11.1 release before I feel safe that I won't have to restore back to 10.10.5. Again.
IMO, Apple pooped the birdie with all these public betas -- it diminished support for the real betas.
No it didn't. The Public Beta was behind the Developer beta so how could it be taking away from "real" betas?

What does Split View do, windows already snap to the left and right of the screen. Will it also include an app switcher like in iOS 9, that would be useful.

Can't wait. Been holding off on upgrading my iPhone & iPad to iOS 9 because Notes doesn't sync with Yosemite.
Apparently, it requires El Capitan.
i realized this as well, so installed el cap on the other devices and it's all syncing. if find it to be stable.
Notes on iOS 9 shows up as offering an in-app upgrade, so it is not automatically updated in order to maintain sync with Yosemite. Apple has an alert about requiring El Capitan for sync IF you upgrade Notes. This pops up when you first launch it after the iOS 9 update. So you can upgrade to iOS 9 now and install El Capitan when you are ready to do so.
I actually read the alert and decided to wait on upgrading Notes until I install El Capitan (maybe I'll wait until next week to do the El Cap update).
I use Notes all the time, taking advantage of the sync across all devices. I experimented a little with MS OneNote, which isn't bad (and very cross-platform) but it just seemed a bit too complex and "busy" for simple note taking. Looking forward to the few new extra features in Notes--hoping "creeping featureism" does not set in. Keep it simple!

While not the worst advice ever, there are changes in EC that has broken software that worked fine in Yosemite and if you have software that you depend on proceed with caution before simply updating.
I have a Mid 2010 15" MBP otherwise known as the "Edsel of Macs". Many of these computers had a defect in the Nvidia graphics card, many did not. My computer never exhibited the defect. That is, it didn't until I installed Yosemite. I started getting GPU panics and the computer crashes. I have the gfxCardStatus app installed that let's me force the computer to the Intel motherboard chipset and the crashes stop. Of course any decent graphics performance stops as well. Naturally the Apple program to fix this defect is long ended so I don't have much recourse.

Yeah, wish I'd held off on iOS 9, but I wasn't paying attention and didn't realize it would disable Notes syncing with Yosemite. Crossing my fingers that El Cap won't screw up my current Notes content on iPad and iPhone.

So far only a few minor issues with a few apps not working too well but overall quite ok.
Now just awaiting being able to download it just for kicks.
Hopefully in the next few days new iphone 6S plus and iPad Air 2 and then the real fun will begin
