Who's Switching to Mac Now?

Just curious.. I am in the process of switching to a Mac. Yes, I'm still using my POS Dell notebook I've grown to HATE! But, my outlook is optimistic at the moment as I know my new 17"iMac will arrive shortly. Thank you god!

Anyways back to the topic of switching. Who here on AI is making the switch now? Maybe we can use this thread as our Q and A session in the weeks to come as we transition into our new Macs. Of course we're not all buying an iMac - so everyone, no matter which Mac you're planning to switch to, please share your transition experiences with us. Reasons for switching, Questions, or problems encountered.

Please let us know which Mac your making the switch to. I for one have wanted to switch for a long time, and only now am I switching. Originally, I had ordered a dual 800 with 22" display from an eBay seller "[email protected]". I paid in January 2002 and still have no computer or refund. Currently the Mass. AG office has filed charges against the seller, whom never delivered the ordered computers or refunds for over $750,000.

That's why when the 17" iMac came out for 2 grand I had to take it. I just can't come up with another 5,000 dollars to buy the real deal. I thought the new 17"iMac would be a good alternative for my financial situation. The 15" iMac was never an option as the screen is just a joke. Wouldn't work for me as a designer.

Hopefully our more experienced members of AI will lend us a hand in our quest to acquire the best of the best in the computer world! The Mac.

I'm smiling now! Are you?

well i switched not so long time ago..

months ago i fell in love with mac (talking about the computers, not mac users) but i didnt haave money before to get me one so i had to survive with my ex (laptop that was running windows).

i hated in a point winzoz so much i put there redhat with kde. and i made it to behave like a mac. so now the macs seem incredibly ocmprensible...

you are anyway on the right place..

I'm switching to a Mac, but only as a laptop. My PowerBook 667DVI is being built as we speak...err type. As far as desktops go it's cheaper to go with PCs. Use windows for gaming, and linux for development environment. But I plan to use my laptop as my main machine, so that way I can carry my work anywhere. And my desktop will become windows for gaming, and file serving (can't get 100Gb+ in a laptop).

I have been a new iBook 14" owner for only 3 months. This is my first Mac. I gave up my 933 P3, 40 gig hd, 64 meg ddr video card, and 512 meg ram desktop plus my 1ghz P3-M, 512ram, 20gig, 15" laptop for this iBook. Both my old systems ran Windows XP which I was happy with XP but not that happy. My main reason for switching was who the hell has time to reformat there system every 3 months just because windows screws up and another thing is on my Laptop my Internet Explorer 6 had become corrupt out of no where which lead me to once again restore the whole computer <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" /> Not even a month later I made my 3 hour one way trip to go to the Apple store and pick up my iBook. The people in the store rocked. I sold any thing I had that had to do with my Wintel computers on Yahoo Auctions. My 1ghz laptop was only 7 months old but I didn't care. I have owned my iBook for 3 months now with no crashes, no restores, and no corrupted data!!! <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> Thank god for Apple. Oh and one other thing I am going to school for Computer Networking and I probably have a 99.99% chance I will have a job working with a ton of wintel machines that just don't work, so I would rather spend my time away from work being able to enjoy computers.

I put up with wintel machines for 10+ years and had enough of all the crap you have to put up with. I would have bought a Mac 5 years ago but than again i was only 17 and really didn't have any money but now .. WOOHOO ... It's all about Apple from here on out.

I am actually contemplating the 'other' switch.

I have been a Mac user since 1985, but current little annoyances are starting to add up to a really, really big one.

For all you PC-&gt;Mac switchers, here's a list:

    - Dual 533 is just as fast as a dual 800

I upgraded from a dual 533 to a dual 800. Bad move. It's only marginally faster and a lot more expensive. That's because in spite of Apple's trying to debunk the Megaherz myth, they used the newer G4 that trades off efficiency for MHz.

    - Quicksilver case sucks

In spite of all the awards, the cool (and aging) look, the latest version of the El Capitan case sucks and has stupid design flaws that Apple does not admit to: the fingerguards cause extra windnoise, and the internal speaker hisses.

    - the drugdealer marketing model

Once 2.2 million iTools accounts had been given out, Apple sprung the trap and used a dispicable (and not very userfriendly) name, while throwing away one of the great marketing advantages of the Mac (lack of viruses) by adding anti virus software to the .mac deal.

    - the lack of an upgrade path to 10.2

    grrr.

    - purposely crippling hardware to make it "consumer" class

lack of (non upgradable) cache in iMacs, eMacs and low end PowerMacs, disableing desktop spanning and larger external display resolutions in iBook, iMac and eMac.

Those poor chips are in agony in their little prisons, can't you hear them? "aargh! give me cache and I rock! let me show you how big a screen I can drive!"

    - monopolies rule on Mac

Want to run MacOS? buy an Apple computer with stuff you'll never use, but pay dearly for: Gigbit Ethernet, 56K modems, combo drives, digital amplifiers. Smart/stupid/rich enough to buy an upgradable Mac? please pay double if you want to buy a new graphics card.

Don't like the way Wacom, Quark, Adobe is treating it's customers? well, don't use a their products then. The other options, if any, are second rate quality, non-standard amoung your customers or ridiculously overpriced or old.

    and for the latest:

    - lack of legacy device support in OS X

thou shalt buy new joysticks, dongles, drawing tablets after buying a Griffin iMate. CONSUME! SLEEP! CONSUME!

Anybody care to buy ADB Intuos, FireBird, gamepad and iMate? will sell for rediculous high price; I need new USB gear.

I hear you thinking, "get a PC then, see how you like it". I use Wintel PCs regularly and I don't like them. There's no sence of flow: I get half the work done in double the time with half the quality, compared to Mac.

However, I don't like being driven into a corner, or blackmailed or squeezed for money.

I have just about had enough of Apple. I buy plenty of hard- and software, for their premium prices. I enjoy MacOS, but everything else Apple stood for is slowly falling to pieces. I think it started when they changed "think different" into "everything is easier on a Mac"; they are becoming just another company, while they actually were special.

Intriguing how the inertia of people caused not only the myth of incompatibility to linger long after it had been solved completely, but also the lingering idea that Apple is cool.

    Apple sucks, Macs rock.

Dude, this is why Mac laptops rule and PC desktops rule. PC desktops are so much cheaper and you can build your own, but as far as laptops go even with PC laptops you can't build your own. PC laptops are pretty much proprietary as far as hardware and stuff goes.

    basically :

"PC desktop = good " b/c they are easily upgradable.

"mac laptops = good" b/c they better battery performance, Apple makes the hardware AND software which makes both mesh better. I hate having to load extra software ON TOP of the OS, just to get the features working, and I'm not talking about drivers. also, OS X rules in the aspect that 1) it isn't windows and 2) I can run all my UNIX back-end stuff and console commands, while still being able to run Adobe products and other mainstream stuff that I would have to boot into windows to run on a PC running linux.

    True.

Though If I got myself a 500Mhz iBook for portable use and throw together some PC, I'd find myself playing games on the PC and working on the iBook. Apple (and others) would still have me in its greedy grasp.

What I want is a non-Apple Mac or a change of heart at Apple. Oh well. neither is going to happen any time soon, so I'll just have to either put up with Apple and part with loads of cash, or accept/embrace & extend the suckiness of PC's.

I'm just hoping that complaining helps, but I don't think so...

You should buy nothing but old, used Macs. A Mac can live for a lot longer than most people think, so always stay 2 years behind the curve and you'll get really fun stuff at really great prices and you won't give two craps about what apple is doing. Unless you play hefty games, does it really matter if you are using a 350 g3? Not really. I can do lots of photoshopping on my 300 Beige G3 that I paid $250 for with a 19" Monitor.

I just sold my G3 and am getting a Lime iMac DV. I am just as excited about receiving this $400 machine as I would be about a $1600 new machine...

Go to <a href="http://www.lowendmac.com"; target="_blank">http://www.lowendmac.com</a>; and dig around. Old Macs rule!

I'm switiching if i pass my A-levels next week

Despite the silly whining about iTools and other minor things, heck its better thna what i currently put up with in windows

And I can't believe people running those early G3's which are supposed to be about on par with my current comp, are complaining they can't run osX too well, heck I don't even dare install anything past win2K on my comp, i know it couldn't handle that stuff and XP is just 2K with some "pretty" vomit enducing borders hacked in, not a whole new OS or anything

Did you have any problems making the switch?

So far so good here. I only had some minor problems getting online. Now that I have my connection problems resolved I couldn't be happier. And as far as window machines go, I'd never buy or use one again if I can get by smoothly with a problem free mac.

My mood changes and my stress levels reduce when I sit in front of my iMac. I never thought I'd be able to say something like that about a computer. I guess that's becuase I used to use a windows machine.

I am switching soooo soooo soon, here are the problem that are in my way.

-The only way to make the Mac usable is to give it internet, but it costs 10 dollors extra a month plus instalation fee's to run the cable to another computer. We want to set up an airport network in our house so that the Mac and the other PC's can use cable(currently one on cable one on modem) We don't know how to do this though and a cross platform wireless thing is waywayway beyond me.

-Price, eeggad they be expensive. I plan to purchase a 17"iMac when the time comes around though.

-Software, all my software and everything is for win xp. I would need to buy more things than just the computer too. . . apple care protection plan. . . antivirus software. . . and on and on and on.

-No floppy, ouch. Its hard to bring things to school to print on a disk because most of the crappy computeters there, don't have working cd rom drives.

    but hey, i'm still optiemistic i don't really understand why though <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />
