Sure, he's probably a smarter 'engineer' than Jobs. So what?

I don't think Jobs lost a lot of money with his main products... at least not 12 years into his business (Tesla). This guy has a ways to go before he starts making money with SpaceX, SolarCity, or Tesla. If he ever does. Nice gig, I'd say!

You have to admit that it's still pretty freaking cool to have a car company that is helping change an entire industry, owns a space company like Richard Branson (which is a huge dream of mine) and is also trying to make something happen in the solar sector. I'm mean come on, that's awesome.

He's a poker player, that's for sure. Remember the old saying, "never let 'em see you sweat"?

Exactly. He has to put up a front of confidence to try to keep his employees from getting jobs at Apple.

Not so sure when all three of his companies rely on our tax money. He is a billionaire using taxpayers to fund him...

About 12 months ago Musk said he would be glad if Apple entered the EV market.

Now that this is getting real Musk is panicking and spewing out bullshit.

This will be just like the quotes from CEO's from Microsoft, Blackberry, Dell, and Nokia.

He threw shade at ?Watch, ?Pencil and iPad Pro. Jony's team must be doing a good job of poaching, or scooping up people Musk wants to hire. If anything all these people just got a huge motivational boost.

I have to say I love seeing a Tesla, and I would love to own one. They seem like great cars and a great step into the future. However, I think Elon is reacting poorly and basically telling the world that Apple is creating a car and that he's scared of it.

Personally I think Tesla could easily stay in the luxury/sports realm and Apple could take a different, more VW approach.  Kind of like the everyday car that's easy to use and looks and works great.  The two could easily co-exist and be very successful.

Jobs lost a ton at NeXT and Pixar, for a long, long time.

It was Steve Jobs's money, not the taxpayers money that Elon relying on. How broke would Tesla, SpaceX and SolarCity be if there was no government contracts or taxpayer funded incentives.

"It's good that Apple is moving and investing in this direction. But cars are very complex compared to phones or smartwatches. You can't just go to a supplier like Foxconn and say: Build me a car," he said. .
This reminds me of Nokias words about rumours about an Apple phone. "They can't just walk in! We have years of experience..." etc. Guess what, they walked in and ruled u out of business... Ignorance might be fatal, Elon.. Of course they can build a car. Tesla can too, and nobody thought they could.

The whole VW fiasco reminds me of when Samsung was caught cheating on benchmark tests.

I entirely agree that Musk runs some pretty cool companies. He's a great guy, and I admire him tremendously (in fact, it diminishes him to give an interview like this).

But Branson!? What exactly is he famous for in the business world? I've always thought of him as the Paris Hilton of global business ...

A 'ton'? Over 12 years? Really? I'd love to see the numbers. Do you have any (credible) cites or links?

(That's leaving aside the fact that Jobs acquired most of his wealth from selling Pixar to Disney.....)

NeXT posted a small profit in 1995, founded in 1986. Pixar showed a profit around the same time. Particularly with Pixar, Jobs kept having to write checks to fund the company; that's why hardly any employees had stock in the company when Jobs took it public.

Oh, we're talking orders of magnitude worse. From what we know so far (and I'll bet there are more shoes waiting to drop, and not just at VW), they've sold the equivalent of 440 million(!) cars in terms of their emissions of soot and particulates. Since 2009. That's a pretty significant number, considering ~70M cars are sold annually, worldwide.

I think Musk is very concerned. Apple is rumored to introduce a car before Tesla reaches profitability. Apple's entrance would weaken Tesla as they would steal some amount of Tesla's market share. Even if Apple's entrance is a poor showing, it would likely still significantly impact Tesla's timeline for profitability.

Quite apart from the fact that I was originally talking about SJ vis-a-vis Apple, can you provide some cites or links? What were the cumulative losses for Pixar and Tesla under SJ? How does it compare to Musk's cumulative losses with Tesla (2003), SolarCity (not sure when), and SpaceX (2002)?

What new envelope-pushing innovation in the car industry is Tesla known for? I am not trying to be contentious, I'd really like to know.

2x the range of the closest production competitor.  The best acceleration of any production four door.  Also the price of the SUV is only high in the beginning.  The price is going to be under $95,000 as soon as the loaded pre-orders are done.

You are all answering the wrong question...including Mr. Musk himself. Ask Apple.

I mean half the population own an Apple device. I think I've seen a Tesla once in my life.

So yeah I'd say they're pretty even.

    1) The number of people using a device by a company isn't an indicator of a cultish mindset. Sure, Apple would surely also lead in numbers, but what about intensity for the average cult member. Then you have the aspect of the lower volume, which Apple use to have; for example, two Tesla owners who meet randomly are probably more likely to start up a conversation with other than those two people if they just happen to both be using iPhones.

    2) I live in California and I see them pretty much everyday when on the road, often several, although I can't recall if I've seen two or more on the road near each other like with other, more common cars. I've even seen one at a gas station... but they were getting something inside the store.

Visit Oslo. It looks like a Tesla dealership at some of the charge stations. The city puts charge stations at about every other block now. Quite impressive infrastructure and it is being maxed because of their great tax incentives on the all electric cars, free tolls entering the city, hov lane use, and that they are seen as "affordable" even with the crappy exchange rate.

Irrelevant (for practical, real-world things, such as entering a highway, once it gets to something like 0-60MPH in 6 secs). But might matter for bragging rights, I suppose. Not much different from Samsung/Microsoft-type focus on tech specs.

So basically Tesla will only succeed where it's customers are getting government subsidies.

...and where wealth is created from shipping fossil fuels to the world, so that they can feel good and virtuous.
