I am getting a free 7200 tonight. This is my first mac so I nee d some help. This computer will be primarily used for storing music and burning CDs. It has been upgraded with a 4 gig hard drive. I dont have much to spend, so I am looking for:

-an internal scuzzie drive CD burner (I dont need a good one, my PC is atrocious,(at almost everything) I am patient when it comes to downloading and burning)

- A cheap 56k modem. (external or internal, it doesnt matter to me.)

I need some places where I can find the above for a decent price.

    Hey Steve,

Try going to lowendmac.com and clicking the email lists link on the right sidebar. Join the LEM-swap list. You can post a wanted ad for anything you need. Hopefully someone will respond with an offer, or at least some advice. You may also want to join the PCI PowerMac list, for advice in general.

Also, for tech support, you should probably post this type of question in the Genius Bar forum.

See you later, Steven. Hope you like the computer.

I have one of these. I never got a burner for it but try the listings at xlr8yourmac.com. They're about as comrehensive as anything.

Do you know what system it is running? I'd recommend version 8.1 or 8.6. If it only comes with the original system disk &lt;shudder--old nightmares&gt; then download version 7.5.5 from Apple--it's free.

Put in as much memory as you can. You might be surprised at how much 168pin DIMMs still cost though.

It's possible to upgrade the machine to a G3 500 but the upgrade is relatively pricey at ~$250 and also a bit klugey. I don't know anyone who has tried this.

If you decide the machine is just too pokey then consider running a version of Linux on it. Due to some funky firmware not all PPC Linux variations will run but I think that Debian will. Try LinuxPPC.com and related sites.

Oh, and the folks at lowendmac are indeed very nice. Definitely give them a look.

    Welcome to the Mac!

    According to the folks at LEM the 7200 is a Road Mac. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Not very upgradable, but for what you need it should work fine.

Just remember that with burners, you get what you pay for most of the time, and ClubMac rocks.

Okay, just to refresh- Its the 120 mhz version, and 9.1 runs fine on it. ( the reason I have 9.1 is to run iTunes)

My friend will give me a 20x internal reader If i get an external burner. (That will improve my 0.5 CD ripping speed, )

It's also a best buy. It's because of their very low price (about $30 used, which isn't too shabby). Also, at the time it was classified as a Road Apple, the G3 upgrade was very, very expensive. It should still be a Road Apple, because Apple promised an upgrade path and never provided one, but it's not nearly as expensive as before.
