Yeah, I agree that the automobile industry is not some upper echelon of innovation compared to consumer electronics. What Apple has going for them is a very keen sense of what is wrong with certain product lines and how to improve them. They can offer a fresh perspective that other automakers can't... I'd dare say, including Tesla. We'll see. Apple appears to be aware that the engineering hurdles are great, hence the "aggressive" delivery deadline in 2019.

Also the $20k ludacris mode (I think actually it costs $10k) is an add on. If you want it you pay for it and you get it. Tesla is an awesome car without it as well.

WTF are you talking 0mph (miles per hour...) (sic).

Acceleration from standing is even more useless than acceleration on the road (were normal cars are in the middle of their power band and accelerate just fine).

The 20K or more is done to overbuild the car. I'm taking about the whole being overbuilt.

To get it to acceerate from zero, the only thing it does better than a regular car, and even then, you can get a Nissan GTR for about the same price and beat it soundly in just about every metric but 100 meter acceleration...

Wow. You seem awfully passionate about this judging by your post.

Going from 0-60 miles per hour is some pretty fun driving. Same with going from 60-100 miles per hour. Same with taking corners. Driving is fun. Period.

The Tesla S is a practical 4-door luxury sedan with tons of interior room to comfortably seat four adults, with a trunk that will hold at least a weeks worth of luggage for 4 adults. Trunk space is 26.3 cubic feet.

The Nissan GTR is an impractical 2-door sports car with enough room to fit 2 adults and maybe two small children in the back, with a trunk that will hold a weekends worth of groceries by comparison. Trunk space is 8.8 cubic feet. Almost a full third less than the Tesla S.

The fact that the Tesla S beats the Nissan GTR in any single performance metric just goes to show how awesome it is.

Unfortunate comments by EM! My pov, it's just not right to vocalize this binary view...he's obviously worried about Apple and needs to create a villain.

More concerning - Tesla had $1.9B in cash/equivalents at Dec-14, and under $1.2B at the end of Jun-2015. I think he should be focused on the company's cash burn rate, considering they don't plan on being profitable until 2020.

This reminds me of ballmer laughing at original iPhone. This reminds me of blackberry laughing at original iPhone. This reminds me of swatch laughing at Apple Watch. Apple will come in and dominate a market. They're no laughing matter and taking them seriously and being honest about it would be better for musk and tesla than laughing.

Really? What would've not laughing accomplished?

    Hate to say it... but....
Computers are so 20th Century... what can you do after the Robot Apocalypse, and the machines take over? Not much opportunity for market growth...!!

Nope... because Mr Musk is some-one who aspires to land his rockets in his Vulcanic lair.... and as Transportation is going to be the next big thing, and Tesla, Amazon, and even Google to some degree have aspirations for Space Transportation, and with Elon Musk making aspiring statements about establishing a colony on Mars... what would really fire up the troops in the "SpaceShip Apple Campus"... would be for "Project Titan" to be establish a human colony on ....Titan! Apple is the one Mega Silicon Valley company that does not have Space Transportation plans take over the universe unlike Blue Origins, SpaceX, or Google [http://www.cnbc.com/2015/10/01/moon-express-rockets-closer-to-planned-lunar-landing.html] ... with all the cash that Apple have, a moon-base established by Apple would be just small change....!!! It is about time that Apple starts to think Galactic!!

And right you are, space is the economic future, even a child can see it.
Maybe Apple has no vision except for the next iPhone, they have shown that they rather burn the money they earn than fly to Mars (they could have been there several times considering the 100th of billions they burned away).

The first one is hilarious. Ed Sheeran does a pretty good job as well.

All Our Patent Are Belong To You

Elon Musk, CEO June 12, 2014
Yesterday, there was a wall of Tesla patents in the lobby of our Palo Alto headquarters. That is no longer the case. They have been removed, in the spirit of the open source movement, for the advancement of electric vehicle technology.

Tesla Motors was created to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport. If we clear a path to the creation of compelling electric vehicles, but then lay intellectual property landmines behind us to inhibit others, we are acting in a manner contrary to that goal. Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology.

When I started out with my first company, Zip2, I thought patents were a good thing and worked hard to obtain them. And maybe they were good long ago, but too often these days they serve merely to stifle progress, entrench the positions of giant corporations and enrich those in the legal profession, rather than the actual inventors. After Zip2, when I realized that receiving a patent really just meant that you bought a lottery ticket to a lawsuit, I avoided them whenever possible.

At Tesla, however, we felt compelled to create patents out of concern that the big car companies would copy our technology and then use their massive manufacturing, sales and marketing power to overwhelm Tesla. We couldn%u2019t have been more wrong. The unfortunate reality is the opposite: electric car programs (or programs for any vehicle that doesn%u2019t burn hydrocarbons) at the major manufacturers are small to non-existent, constituting an average of far less than 1% of their total vehicle sales.

At best, the large automakers are producing electric cars with limited range in limited volume. Some produce no zero emission cars at all.

Given that annual new vehicle production is approaching 100 million per year and the global fleet is approximately 2 billion cars, it is impossible for Tesla to build electric cars fast enough to address the carbon crisis. By the same token, it means the market is enormous. Our true competition is not the small trickle of non-Tesla electric cars being produced, but rather the enormous flood of gasoline cars pouring out of the world%u2019s factories every day.

We believe that Tesla, other companies making electric cars, and the world would all benefit from a common, rapidly-evolving technology platform.

Technology leadership is not defined by patents, which history has repeatedly shown to be small protection indeed against a determined competitor, but rather by the ability of a company to attract and motivate the world%u2019s most talented engineers. We believe that applying the open source philosophy to our patents will strengthen rather than diminish Tesla%u2019s position in this regard.

I was aware of the guy. I can imagine Ludacris mode blasting "Move Bitch" instead of honking a horn, I suppose.

Thanks for posting those tolerable and amusing song versions. Nice.

The bottom line at Tesla is that if you are willing to jump ship over money, then get the hell out because you weren't committed enough to work here in the first place. That philosophy ensures that you attract only those who are loyal, committed to your mission, and really want to work there. Lately it seems like Apple just throws money at problems and that a pile of cash will spur innovation. Good luck with that.

What "problems" is Apple "throwing money" at?
