I was watching The Screen Savers tonight and they had two guys from China talking about how they are using a customized version of Linux that is setup almost identical to Windows and how they plan to use it has the primary OS and why they don't want to use MS Windows in their country.

    Yeah, China's making their own Linux...Red Flag or something...they are aiming for the useability of Win95, which is rather practical...They are also designing CPUs...guess government just wants in (by force or not) on the big semi industry.



    Another note, Top 3 Chinese websites (Sohu, 163, 'n somethin else) are ranked in the top 15 websites by number of hits (which isn't bad)...but who else thing it's ridiculous that they ONLY render properly in Win IE? especially considering the push for Linux (thus Mozilla etc)

    their linux is just a hacked up mandrake distro. when you say that they're designing chips, you mean buying from taiwan right? <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

    China doesn't want to run an Operating System that is dominated by the USA, They are afraid it will be used agaisn't them, which is pretty smart thinking.

    My point is that "customized version of Linux that is setup almost identical to Windows" is just Mandrake and WINE. When i say hacked up i literally mean hacked up, they only replaced a few pictures with their logos and switched around some words in the installers.



    The real news coming out of China OS wise is that they're trying to reverse engineer Win98.

    The March edition of The Linux Journal had a great article on Linux getting bigger in classrooms. It seems that in Nepal a lot of schools are using nothing but Linux.

    So why does the US Army still use Windows? I mean, when Bill Gates takes over the world, the USA is included, right?



    At least the Army uses Macs to serve web pages. Too bad the Navy is still intent on running ships with Windows. They'll have more towing to do yet. <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />

    Think about how computer savvy the Chinese kids may be if they have to learn Linux right from day one. And you think the hackers out there are scary NOW.

    Joke 'bout this all you want...I wouldn't be surprised if China surpasses Taiwan in all forms of technology in 5 to 10 years. What do they have? C3/C4...not all that impressive if you ask me.

    Yeah, like all those security holes M$ knows 'bout but don't patch up until a major news source reveals it. I think they are required to disclose such info with the US government though...i dunno...now, only if China can produce less spam and more competent webmasters who can write Sohu's site to work on not Just WinIE...

    Okay, so less than .5% of China's population actually owns a computer. If they all move to Linux, that's still a BIG deal.

    They can, but they probably won't. They are part of the WTO remember...



    All you are probably going to see is the Chinese government banning Windows in the communist party and service departments and heavily promoting 'China OS' with real good Chinese language support...

    Banning Windows would just be the nail in the coffin (for Windows). It's a second world country. They don't have hundreds of dollars per seat to drop on buggy, highly insecure, architecturally inferior crap.



    Ironically, M$'s anti-piracy measures (annoying verification, software 'subscriptions' that can be revoked, etc) is going to bite them in the ass in a very big way. There's a pretty big migration all over towards linux. The latest Linux Expo was huge and business oriented (instead of hacker-oriented).



    Being part of the WTO means China has to crack down on Windows piracy (or at least have the appearance of doing so). So linux is on the rise there, any way you slice it. Pretty much any sane country is moving or has moved government data to a more secure, robust OS, for many reasons, not the least of which is espionage.

    Well, if the Chinese haven't found a way of pirating WinXP yet I guess they will just have to keep using the single copy of Win98 that the whole country has bee using till now

    I love China. Long may their hackers reign. Once they start knocking-off other people's chip and MoBo designs, it's gonna be great. I can't wait to buy a 199 PC that runs rings around a 2999 Mac.

    I hope IBM's forthcoming PPC causes a renewed interest in the PPC platform. If we could get some Chinese black market knock-offs of Apple boards and PPC... MUHAHAHAA!!!

    But so weird that in the land of Linux (the Linux creator used to live in Finland when he was young ) no one seems to know or use Linux.. having been a week here i think i haven't seen so many windows anywhere else (yes even in tv news background i saw nt.. )



    Just why on earth make the Linux look and behave like windows?? i use mine behaving like mac ..
