Apple: Hardware on Hold

Posted:
in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
Maccentral <a href="http://maccentral.macworld.com/news/0202/11.applehardware.php"; target="_blank">quotes Apple</a> as saying that there will be 'no new CPUs at Macworld Tokyo' and that the company is 'set for some months now.'

Guess this means it will be all about OSX for a while.

"The G4 has a long life ahead of it," said Joswiak. "There are a number of tweaks and revs that will happen to that processor over a long period of time."

I guess the rumors I heard about a newly designed G4 may be spot on. 130nm and a new core with more L2 cache and a better bus. I heard the pipeline will be extended to 11 stages. This was a rumor heard on the DL and the source is non-technical so take it with a grain of sodium-cloride.

    i don't believe it

    apple never talks

    about upcoming

    hardware in the

    first place

    and of course

    they don't want

    people to wait

    for the new products

    they want people

    to buy things now

    i still think

    bump pb at mwt

Well, maybe that will quell some of the rumors for a while. Maybe not. :o

lunardelite, you have the most annoying way to write posts. Use punctuation and stop with the carriage returns. It makes your posts almost impossible to decern. My brain hurts from reading them.

    [quote]from the MacCentral article

"Satisfied with the current line-up of hardware,"<hr></blockquote>

This quote from the article is apparently attributable to Apple's senior director of Hardware Product Marketing Greg Joswiak. This is extremely depressing.

Apple hardly ever responds to rumors, this is true, but lately Apple has done its best to quiet rumors and speculation about its new products (Macworld San Fran being the only exception). So, if Apple is saying no new computer updates for a few months then they mean no new computer updates for a few months. But, that leaves the doors wide open for all of their i-apps and MacOS X, plus any iPod-like hardware if they wish. They're probably just stocking up on higher clocked CPUs for WWDC or, more likely, Macworld NY.

    Question on semantics:

What does "no new CPUs" mean? does that exclude speed bumps? Could apple say this, but still give the TiBook a little bump in Tokyo? It's looking way overpriced in the lineup right now, so obviously not a total overhaul, but just some more speed to keep it in line with pro specs...

We're talking about nothing new on the CPU front probably until MWNY. However, another digital device could be on the near horizon before then. With the economy being the way it is Apple needs to consolidate its current products, improve profit margins and start getting sales above and beyond Mac buyers.

Yeah, it's a way of slowing down all these boards and the rumours that spill out to the general public.

Apple doesn't need Joe Public to consider buying a new Titanium only for him to hold off because he heard on Appleinsider that a G5 version is around the corner.

Probably a good move on Apple's part. For the rest of us, not so good, but let's just make do with what we have.

Perhaps Apple can now focus more on optimizing and fine tuning OSX.

Its all over boys. Steve has decided to throw a bucket of cold water on all the horny little rumor breeders. This forum is sure going to get boring for a while. I hope 10.2 builds start leaking soon, or I'll have to get a real life or actually use my computer for real productivity or something. I just know I could be more productive and creative with a G5, but that's not gonna happen. Of course I thought the same thing about the G4, but it just isn't fast enough.

I think what Apples has said needs to taken with a grain of salt. I'm sure they're responding to the mass of rumors that have been plaguing the sites lately. I would take it that there will be no up date for the PB in any way until at least MWNY. If Apple chose to update in March it would be the fastest update ever on the PB line. While I believe that Apple wants to provide updates as soon as they can. Apple seems to operate on quite different economics than other major hardware builders (Dell, HP, Sony). They don't have the daunting task of designing, developing and improving software for their hardware. This takes huge $$ to make happen, so sometimes what we think is a no brainer is much more to consider than we think. To make the software work right has always been first and foremost for Apple as it should be. That's why we use Mac's isn't it?

I'm guessing nothing new until May. Or at least until they remove the "NEW" logos from the Apple Store.

    i think the quickest

    'book bump was

    the 2001 ibook

    it went from

    500 mhz in may

    to 600 mhz in oct

    and what is all

    this talk about

    another digital device

    a digi camera?

    no way

    they would be

    outclass by

    canon, nikon, etc. . .

    the only thing

    i can see

    might be a pda

    cuz there isn't

    one that really

    stands out

What happens when you take Steve Wozniak's hardware genes and splice them with Steve Job's marketing genes? You get Apple's senior director of Hardware Product Marketing -- Joswiak!!!!

<img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" /> I think we should be a bit more conservative with our interpretations. Before MW in Jan, I was thinking those teasers were telling us that the second coming of Christ was on the horizon, but instead we got an iMac. If we restrict our rumormongering to stuff which they specifically tell us isn't happening, then we'll get dissapointed. They just told is, in plain language, that theres not gonna be any new hardware for a while. So, theres not. OS X.1.3, soon, and x.2 later, but hdwr will be a while.

I don't know. I can't make out the meter but it does sort of look like e. e. cummings writing, doesn't it?

I think it's really funny that, even when Apple comes right out and says (paraphrasing), "no new stuff for a few months," we all still try to figure out a way for that to mean there's going to be new stuff in the next few months. Myself included .

I immediately latched on to the "CPU" semantics and thought maybe that left them room for bumps. In fact, I went a little further and thought, "hmmm... 'CPU'... well, that might only mean they aren't going to be changing any of the processors... gonna stick with G4s... they're just squashing the G5 rumors! And, they said 'few months'... that means we'll have a G5 after only a few months! Yippeee!"

    Ridiculous, isn't it?
