Apple releases iOS 9.1 with motion sensing Live Photos, plus taco, middle finger & hockey emoji

The new iOS 9.1 update is now available, improving Live Photos on the iPhone 6s with motion sensing capabilities to identify when a user raises and lowers their phone, and also adding more than 150 new emoji characters.

iOS 9.1 is now available to download through the Settings app on an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, and it can also be obtained through iTunes on a Mac or PC. According to Apple, the update includes new features, improvements and bug fixes.

Changes highlighted by Apple are:
  • Live Photos now intelligently senses when you raise or lower your iPhone, so that Live Photos will automatically not record those movements
  • Over 150 new emoji characters will full support for Unicode 7.0 and 8.0 emojis
Both iOS 9.1 and the newly released OS X 10.11.1 include new emojis for a taco, burrito, hot dog, cheese, popping champagne bottle, ice hockey, ping pong, archery, and even a middle finger.

iOS 9.1 also adds compatibility for the forthcoming fourth-generation Apple TV and iPad Pro.

Apple has also tweaked the shift key on the virtual keyboard in iOS 9.1, making it clearer when text is uppercase or in caps lock. There are also a handful of new wallpapers, including Mars, Jupiter, and Neptune.

Also released on Wednesday was iTunes 12.3.1, which Apple said includes stability and performance improvements.

I'm glad to see Apple improved Live Photos. The recording of unwanted movement has been my biggest complaint about Live Photos.

This is the biggest apple update in decades! The middle finger emoji.

How did that get past Apple's strict decency guidelines?? Think of the CHILDREN!!!!

This should of been called 9.0.3 rather than 9.1 - its a very minor update with no ?Music bug fixes at all. Which is what I and others were expecting. Oh well we'll have to wait for the 9.1.1 or 9.2 versions then.

    I noticed that.

Last gen 8.1 updates were huge.

    No wonder AAPL's up a $1.13, as we speak... <img class=" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

This update is for the iOS 9 beta(developer) which when issued was 9.1. Those with 9.02 will be issued 9.1 when available unless they are giving everyone 9.1.

Taco emoji? I'm pretty sure that it wont take long before somebody somewhere claims that it's racist or something.

I'm not an expert on emojis, but I was wondering if these emojis are universal, across all devices? If an iPhone user sends it to somebody on a Mac, will the Mac user see these new emojis? What about if an iPhone user sends it to a Windows user? Will the Windows user see the emoji?

You're allowed to type "****" on this forum, so I would assume that the answer to that question is yes. :smokey:

Edit: apparently, you're not allowed to type **** on this forum anymore.<img class=" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

That must be a recent change, because I could've sworn that it was permitted not that long ago. The word that I typed is everybody's favorite four letter word that begins with F and ends with K.

Apparently not. It strips out the unicode entity.

I've just installed 9.1 and I've got the News app now and it seems pretty good! Also as advertised the multitasking app switching section now really flies! It was rather sluggish before. I've also noticed the storage left on my iPhone has gone up from 1.3 to 2.5 Gigs! Overall this update has been better than I thought it would be. Maybe it deserves the 9.1 moniker after all?

No, I'm pretty sure that it's not in my head, but rather in the heads of other deranged and disgusting individuals, because I just read about something similar that happened recently. There was a College that served Mexican food during one of their theme nights, and some students (intolerant liberals no doubt), claimed that it was racist. Various news sources reported it.:smokey:

And to little fanfare, Apple jumps the shark.

Racist, intolerant liberals? Is that some parallel universe where liberals are insensitive bigots and conservatives are open minded and support equality?

im just guessing, but that implies it wasnt about the food -- but the people dressed up in sombreros and whatnot. not unlike if it was Chinese night and they all wore conical hats and said "love you long time" or some nonsense. we really dont know exactly what the one student's core complaint was.

but it wasnt the tacos themselves. and their certainly will not be any complaining about the emoji, as you claim, since it is the taco itself and nothing else.
