What does "no new CPUs" mean? does that exclude speed bumps? Could apple say this, but still give the TiBook a little bump in Tokyo? It's looking way overpriced in the lineup right now, so obviously not a total overhaul, but just some more speed to keep it in line with pro specs...

Didn't Apple also announce in advance there would be no new hardware for Paris and maybe Seybold but weren't the iBook and TiBook updated just a couple weeks later?

I intretpret this to clearly indicate that no G5 is coming out till MWNY or later. Next, I would think that the powerbooks are not getting a form factor change in the next few months. This includes my much-hoped-for three pound iBook. However, I'm withholding judgement as to whether or not the pbooks will get speed bumps in Tokyo.

    A 700 or 800MHz iBook with a 40GB HD would be sweet.

    Apple:

"the upcoming Expo in Tokyo will see no new hardware; in fact, the company will not be updating its line of computer products for the coming months"

    READ THIS AND BELIEVE IT!!!

Apple ain't joking here so lets stop all the BS.

I think it's pretty funny that Apple sent out a message to people like us to quiet us down and stop the speculation, and instead we're going through Apple's words with a fine tooth comb, searching for loop holes and speculating on the what Apple really meant to say. hehe

I need to get at TiBook...if there's even a 51% chance that it'll get a bump in Tokyo, I can afford to wait...but not until NY... If not, I'll go out and buy a 667 tomorrow - but geez, it just seems so overpriced right now with the iMac and the pMac so much faster and relatively cheaper. This is the type of thing that makes me feel (sometimes emoticons are the truest form of expression)

I dont think this is depressing at all. If anything, I think it means that progress has been made at that the G4 <cross fingers> will ramp over the coming months/year.

Apple had to come out w/this statement. Dont forget about SJ's MoneyLine interview on the evening of MacWorld. The iMac had just come out, and instead of talking about the cool new computer Lou Dobbs decides to ask Steve about the G5. Because they dont have it and the rumors make everyone think its around the corner, it over shadows everything and makes any G4 look bad.

I used a DP 1Ghz yesterday...wow. I can only imagine how much nicer things will be as the chips speed up. As long as the G4 doesnt stagnate again, I dont have any problem w/it.

    Yep we're all agreed then.

    We're stuck with a Dp 1ghz machine.

    Isn't it awful.

Haven't Apple previously said there's be no new hardware for a while and then surprised us? Seriously, I'm asking as I can't remember.

I'd like to think they want to boost PM sales to bolster this quarters sales, and get people buying G4s again.

The title of this thread is not accurate. Apple said that CPUs are on hold. Hardware is not. I'm thinking that MWTY will bring a new device. No processor upgrades does not preclude new device introductions. Look for something big to "focus on the other 95%."

What you're all forgetting is that the poeple who care most about Apple bringing out hardware on a regular basis are the analysts. That article is NOT going to help their stock rating.

I only expected a PowerBook speedbump for MWTY, so that's no big deal, as I don't need or want a PB atm, but still, whenever a company puts something "on hold" it's usually bad news.

I think the statement is pretty clear...

till MWNY we will see a focus on:

1 - Apps - starting this week with at least a new quicktime app.

2 - Digital devices - The statement specifically states CPU's...not hardware.

I think we will see both.

So...this makes the boards even more interesting!!!! Before we had to guess speeds and processors...now we have to speculate about entirely new devices.

My take is we will see a new iPod and a ProPod...

    Apple at MacWorld Tokyo:

"No, no, no! Don't be ridiculous! We meant our Cute Penguin Underwears. We are very happy with our penguin-imprinted underwear. Wanna see it? No need to upgrade our underwears for the foreseeable future. Processors and such? Yes, of course! Here they are!"

Maybe YOU are stuck with a DP 1GHz G4+ machine.

    I am stuck with a 300 MHz G3!

Frankly we have had a lot of good hardware recently and most of it is pertty good. I suspect that Apple has collected enough new iMac orders to keep the actories busy for at least four months. I never expected to see the G5 before MWNY and these things always take a lot longer than we expect, so it probably won't come 'till next year.

The big issue is OSX, it is now the OS standard and is still work in progress. I would be more than satisfied if they were to do some serious optomisation and release 10.2 asap. Sorting out OSX will bring benifits to a lot more Apple customers than new hardware. We've all got machines and whilst it is nice to get new ones, I would like the one I have now to run at the same speed it did under OS9.

I think Apple is on a roll at the moment, I think they have the right road map. I think we are seeing more regular updates, better iApps, better everything. Look at the leap in video cards, and duel 1ghz is quite an achievement. It is clear that the Apollo has a way to go and I am sure we will see regular bumps.

I doubt that we will see DDR or ATA100 until the G5. But I am sure it is on the road map.

I think that the strategic purchases that Apple has mad during the last two years is part of a much bigger plan to take out SGI. I also expect Apple to follow some of MS business models and force hardware/software upgrades.

Well, if they are not upgrading for a while - what are all of their hardware designers going to do in the meantime? Become laid off? Certainly not! Especially the Mobo/ASIC designers, etc. Any guesses? They'll probably just go play Boule in the backyard awaiting a call to update the PM mobo a little... .

Seriously, I am looking forward to what's going to come out of this hardware sabatical, maybe in NY, highly probably in SF '03. Meanwhile let's be entertained by some fun new software!

Guess this means it will be all about OSX for a while.

My guess is that a Quad G4 is not ruled out by this statement. Apple needs to provide it's true Pro users with something better fast. My sig says it all.
