Android software poses little threat to the PRC. Google indexes information and news that's a threat to the PRC. Access to Google (including Google Maps, Google Play, everything) , as well as Facebook, Twitter, etc are all inaccessible to users in China.

But if an Android phone is the conduit/passthrough device, or the Android OS is the software method which enables the passage of information going in and out of China, wouldn't that be a threat?

Gatorguy think he is smarter than all of us, but in fact he is only good in parroting half-baked unreliable information from random Google search. What an idiot.

So if they don't have access to Google Play, does that mean they are not Android devices?

Meanwhile, whenever iOS malware pops up from third party sites that you have to jailbreak your phone to get at, they say that isn't an issue because you shouldn't jailbreak because it is a security risk and that isn't how the phone ships.

WTH are you fracking about, you're comparing jailbreaking (which a minute number of people do these days) to using the OS as designed.

And no, this isn't AT ALL like what your saying.

Google now wants their OEM to be basically slaves to them; blaming OEM and even users for not bending over and accepting the absolute opposite of how the god damn system was initially marketed, means Google is a real piece of work company.

If Google wants to be IOS, people with money using it might as well go to IOS, because Google is doing a half assed job of copying IOS.

Seems like that's what's happening with the constant profit erosion on the Android side.

Also, what about 80% of people who can't even have basic security because Google messed up in the past and they're stuck with it; are they all to blame too. Should they throw their phone out, and now buy a new one with the "correct" software in a Google approved way so Google gets all the money. Considering their still get a not encrypted POS in most cases, why do that?

I guess the communists should also bow down to the god of Google and close down their own shop were hundreds of millions get apps... Seems that's "logic".

Built your argument in a logical way next time and make sense otherwise your whole spiel is pure absurd comedy (sic)

I say relatively as many here have opined that China is a problem unto itself when it comes to app stores.

Wow that was desperate. The way you tried to shift blame away from Google in that last sentence was particularly cringeworthy.

Your 'impartial informer' personae has taken a real beating in this thread, and it hasn't been pretty. :-(

You need to be a little more selective when choosing which of Google's battles you want to fight. Steer away from the indefensible.

It's not even controversial that Google promoted open access to any app stores as a primary feature of Android. That only was backpedaled after it blew up into a security nightmare. You were making excuses for it all the way, don't you remember?

Also, any form of Android, whether ASOP or Nexus branded or whatever, has no access to Google Play in China. Everything Google is blocked in China.

With Google reportedly in talks with Chinese authorities about opening a new Android app store, speculation is rife that an agreement could see government-approved apps would come automatically installed on Google’s Android smartphones designed for the Chinese market.

Many interpret this step as Google planting a seed for its eventual return to Chinaafter exiting the Chinese market five years ago – yet our research at the University of Pennsylvania shows that Google has never completely left.

Google is planning to expand its presence in China, Eric Schmidt, chairman of the search giant's holding company, has said.

Google search left the Chinese mainland in 2010, after the company said it would no longer self-censor results.

It also accused the Chinese government of being behind a cyber-attack on it and many other tech companies.

Mr Schmidt echoed comments by Google co-founder Sergey Brin, who said last week some services would return.

even the Chairman of Google thinks you are wrong.

That's not true tho. Most Android phones ship open to permissively downloading apps. Also, checking a box is not really the same as going out of your way to jailbreak a phone.

    No they don't

That may be true regarding the minority of nexus phones sold in the USA, but "most" android phones are literally sold in a country that can't access Google Play.

Beyond that, your specious arguments are ridiculous. Your up and down denials of reality don't make any Android's serious problems go away.

Google defined android as a freedom platform where nobody has any control and there's no standards for hardware. What resulted is what's being observed now. It's a mess and Google is scrambling to undo everything it created to copy Apple instead. But it doesn't even have the control to do this.

What are you talking about, All google android phones are setup to deny third party sources.

    Stop confusing your devices

Google explicitly sold the "openness" of Android's app distribution as a feature. A variety of alt android app markets have attempted to erect a walled garden like Amazon.

This is not true, there are no "localized versions of Play Store"

To access any Google services in the PRC, you have to fight your way around censors actively blocking connections to all Google services. While occasionally possible if you're fighting for it (until your VPN is blocked again), the flat truth is that Google is and has been blocked since at least 2010. Since then, Chinese services have taken hold. At this point, Google making a return to China is as likely as Blackberry becoming relevant in the US. People have moved on.

I've been to China and tried to access Google services. Has anyone else here copying and pasting URLs been there, or is this a theoretical discussion?

localized substitutes, as in what people commonly use in other countries.

Google Play is pretty much a joke in the US, let alone other countries.

stop confusing your personal anecdotal experience with the "billion" devices using some form of Android. Because the discussion here is Android as a whole, not your personal experience on a small island with lots of money.

Yup. Been there, worked there and had some really nice food.

Did you look at any of the urls and read the information?

If what you were saying were true, there would be no difference between iOS and Android security. That's not true at all.

Can you show just one smartphone with Play Store with that flag disabled?
