Yea OS X is just great, please don't flame me, but I didn't really like the old Mac OS, but OS X blows me away. I can't wait to see 10.2 with its openGL windows.

The brand. Nothing else about them is worth nearly as much as their name.

They have a kind of brand mystique that few companies have, especially for a tech company.

Actually, according to the stockholders, the rest of whatever it is they have isn't worth a whole lot more than that stockpile of cash they have.

:: starts wondering when they are going to turn that pile into less liquid assets... ::

im feeling you on that one. What do they have 11 per share in cash and short term investments. I think that the rest of the company is worth $4 and change per share.

I think the fact that they're still around is amazing. When you consider them hemorrhaging so much money in bad research, poor projects, desperate schemes, clone licensing, golden parachutes, missed opportunities, bad marketing, bad leadership, poor protection of its intellectual property, bad sales, bad PR, dumb distractions, yadda yadda, it gives you some perspective. There are few companies that have pulled themselves out of sheer nose-dives like Apple did. Even though it's a struggle to keep the thing level even now, it's a lot better than it used to be.

the fact that the Apple I was in fact the first 'home/personal' computer

    a) that was

    b) that was affordable

    c) that could actually do something (unlike the altair)

So, everybody can say what they want about X, but without Apple, there maybe wouldn't have been anything like X, nor like Windows, or like Dell, or Compaq, or (i.e. no consumer hardware/software).

THAT is, I think, the most remarkable Apple fact

The continued success o' the MacIntosh computer is entirely dependent on the festival o' The Wicker Mac celebrated in the mare bedarkened corners o' the Western Isles. For this a large Mac effigy is woven frae canes (dyed in appropriate hues) and at the appropriate time set aflame (wi' optional human sacrifice), thus appeasing the dark forces o' marketness and ensuring the survival o' the platform for anither year.

I'm most amazed that people make aquariums out of perfectly good Macs.

The most amazing Apple fact is: they did in four years what Linux couldn't do in twelve (STILL can't, actually): they made a simple, easy to use GUI on top of UNIX. It HARDLY gets more amazing than that.
