Windows may be trademarked, but it also walks a fine line. A judge here basically told Microsoft piss off over the "Lindows" Linux distro's name for example. Believe it or not, the advertising laws in America are considered extremely liberal by comparison. Here in the UK, you can't promote your own product by comparing it to, or demoting, others. A classic example is the Apple ad featuring a snail with a Pentium II processor on its back. Those were the days!
I really do like these new ads. They seem much more "real" than the originals and the people talk more about the products than just fluffy "beep-beep! it devoured my paper!" crap.

I saw some show about him on MTV (or some other kiddie pop culture channel, I don't remember, damn kids these days with their fancy tv shows... but I digress) and for at least a minute or two it was just him walking around and showing off his iPod to some other huge basketball guys, talking about how cool it was. Then in his home you could see a PowerBook open and running in clear view.
I just hope they don't do an ad with Rosie O'Donell.
There seems to be a lot of people singing the praises of the new crop of Switch ads. Indeed, they do appear to be an improvement over the first round in that they seem a bit more polished. But, content wise, they are still utter crap. Here is a brief overview of each add, individually.
PCs don?t work. They are too hard to figure out. You can?t work with images, movies, or audio on a PC. There is no way to import video into a PC for the home user. Only a Mac can do that.
You will lose your work on a PC because they crash all the time. Macs are safe because they never crash. Macs share files, (implying that PCs don?t). You don?t need an IT department with Macs in the business world.
Prior bad experiences should make you afraid to use a modern day PC in your business. PCs are unreliable business tools. You have nothing to worry about with the Mac. You don?t even have to learn how to use them.
With iMovie, you can edit video. You can use iTunes to record speeches. (How on earth do you do that out of the box with a Mac?) Apple provides feature that make teaching and learning possible, unlike the PC (I guess).
Digital devices don?t work with PCs. But they all work perfectly with Macs Drivers are never an issue for Macs The Mac provides universal compatibility out of the box.
I can carry all my music with me without the need to carry all those bulky CDs (because I am a Mac user as opposed to a Windows user).?
Well, there you have it. One of the biggest assemblages of FUD (by the way, what does ?FUD? stand for) I have ever seen. Let?s recap. PCs can?t handle digital media. Macs make better business tools. PCs constantly crash while Macs never crash. PCs are just too difficult to learn but Mac are so brain dead simple, you don?t even have to bother to learn them. PCs are compatible with nothing while Macs are compatible with everything. PCs are darkness, Macs are light. PC users need Mac evangelists to come and save their computing souls. That is the message of the new Switch ads. That is the message of ALL the Switch ads. Like their predecessors, these new ads just make me NOT want to switch. If outright lies and disinformation are the best Apple can come up with to advertise their products, then what does that say about the products and the company that makes them?

if you don't want to accept the outright truth, you must be blind.
that is the beauty of these ads....apple isn't saying anything, apple is not making any claims....apple is just airing these people's opinions of their old pc and of their new macs....if you think the ads are full of lies, then it is not your opinion vs apple's, it is your opinion vs the person in the ad (and, though you can disagree with a person's opinion, a person's opinion can never really be a lie)
....the only thing i would like added is showing the person holding their iBook or PB or standing next to their iMac or PM....with a big i love my mac sh!t-eating grin.....g

Nice try, but that doesn?t really cut it. Apple is using these people to speak on their behalf. Apple is speaking through these people. If they said something that was against Apple?s interests they would not appear on the commercials. Apple is using these claims and implications to sell their product. So Apple IS saying the things that are in the ads. If you hire someone to lie for you, you are still lying.

I do agree that it wouldn't hurt to perhaps SHOW the hardware/software being talked about a little bit.
Can either cut away and show nice, stylized shots of iMacs, PowerBooks, etc. Or simply have the person talking holding their laptop, or standing beside a PowerMac or iMac or whatever.
Might be a nice little tie-in and serve as - along with the stuff being said - a nice little "one-two punch".
Apple is crazy to not exploit their delicious hardware a bit more.
Thanks Brad. For a moment, I thought I may have been using an expression that was mildly profane. Now, I feel more confident than ever in calling Apple?s switch ads the BIGGEST FUD CAMPAIGN ever. Bigger than Gateway?s. Bigger than Intel?s. There is not one word of the ads that is not designed to spread fear, uncertainty, and doubt in the minds of unknowledgeable and inexperienced PC users.

guess i have to watch more of the ads....i have only see the one with the girl that "saved christmas"...everything she talks about is her experience at home and how her dad couldn't download photos on his new PC without searching for drivers for an hour, and how easy it was for her on her mac....where are the lies and FUD in that?? if apple doesn't write a script for them and they tell of their own "personal" experiences with both pc and mac then were are these lies and desparate ploys you claim??? g

Please read my original post. You have to take the message of the ad campaign in its totality. Apple is trying to paint a picture with these ads. It is the picture that is the FUD, not the individual brush strokes. Do as I did. Watch all the ads one after the other and you will get a better feel for the picture as a whole.
Your claim that this campaign is plain "FUD" is a bit too biased against Apple. Perhaps you need to take a wider look at the advertising industry. All kinds of products and services, from computers to headache medicines to automobiles, point out subjective comparisons favoring one product over another. Using personal opinions is nothing new. Nearly every advertisement uses them in some form. The whole point of comparative advertising is to get the consumer to dislike the competing product and prefer the advertised one.
If you payed closer attention to all products being advertised rather than focusing on criticizing Apple's ads, I believe you would find that these aren't so bad.
