How big will MWNY be?

in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
With the news from apple that it won't update its hardware anytime soon means that hardware will be updated at MWNY.

Do you think apple will update both portables and desktops at macworld?

If so do you think the powermacs might distance itself from the imac?

Um..the Powermac is distanced from the iMac.

We could see a total product line refresh at MWNY, who knows, its too early to call.

I don't know the exact dates, but I do believe MWTY is at the end of March and MWNY is at the end of July.

Portables at WWDC (May) and desktops in July sounds pretty good to me

Actually, I see consumer CPUs (iBook/iMac) getting updated in their own thing -- special event or quiet upgrade, and pro machines (PB/PM) getting updated in New York.

I can't imagine any sort of upgrade for the iMac until MWNY at the earliest and even that is probably too soon.

Heck they've only started to ship in quantities and it's already mid Feb. And the low end won't be out for another month!

The time frame for speeding up the iMac is right for New York this summer. It also gets the new computers out there for back to school. For the pro line-up its time for an overhaul. I doubt that we will see it untill New York, and the venue is right for a major anouncement. It dosnt look like we will get the G5 this year if the Registers reports are acurate. But then again at current speed levels, 1.5 ghz gives at most 1 year left for the G4 in Apples pro line-up.

    MWT March 21, 22, 23

    MWNY July 16, 17, 18, 19

    MWSF 2003 January 7, 8, 9, 10

    Speculation:

No changes to the iMac till at least the fall, more likely MWSF, unless some monster problem rears its head. In that case there will be a rev to fix it. The iMac looks so good that I can't imagine what it needs. Certainly we can all think of things to add on to it. But it is not like the TiBook last year which really needed a combo drive.

TiBook - I think there will be speed bumps and maybe some feature bumps (larger HD, more memory, faster bus?) before MWNY. The big change for the TiBook will be a larger/more high resolution display and it is probably too soon for that.

iBook - same thing. Speed bump before MWNY. Probably not much else. Maybe a larger HD.

The laptops will be changed before MWNY so that Apple can focus on the PowerMacs there. I think the towers will see a substantial speed bump and some feature bumps (FW2?, larger and faster HD, AT100?, DDR?). By then we will have seen OS 10.2 and maybe even OS 10.2.1 as well as Photoshop for OS X and probably a number of other major apps for OS X (Quark?) making this a great show for the pros.

Also more news about Powerschool, Apple Stores, maybe a new version of iPhoto. By July Apple hardware will be the most solid, reliable combination available to the general public. MWNY should be a kind of celebration. Will Steve declare that it is now twelve o'clock on his metaphorical timepiece?

Which, incidently, is about 1/200th as big as most people here will expect it to be, resulting in a lot of whining in Future Hardware over the following few days. Or months...

I just don't see apple going an entire year from it's new iMac announcement until it's next rev. I think apple has had quite a lot of success with the fairly frequent small updates to the iBook.

I think we'll see a Power Mac with all the fun bus and ram buzzwords and the imac will get a quiet bus and mhz bump.

The iMac will need a speed bump in August or September if for nothing esle but PR for Apple. This is when Apple intros the hardware that they have for back to school and Christmass, so a speed bust will be needed to hold the iMac over till next January. Possibly holding onto the 700 mhz at the bottom end, and cutting the cost, then the top end iMac gets a 900 mhz or 1 ghz processer.

The big question for New York is will we finally see a new mother board, and which processor will they use. Apple will need a 1.2 to 1.4 ghz processer for the PowerMacs by the end of the summer if they are going to continue to be attractive for high end video use.

MWNY is going to be much less significant than the Apple hype preceding it will suggest. Apple has gotten into the bad habbit of over promising Macworld announcements. I think I'll take a break from all of the rumor sites about two weeks prior to Macworld so that I can simply be happy with what comes, instead of being disappointed.

I've always tried to do what big mac does and just not look at the rumor sites before the expo

MWNY.... just as big as MWSF... nothing more.

As soon as every one of these off the wall MW predictors realize that in order to enjoy a mac world you need to not set your goals high at all... setting them low allows for surprise and allows you to ENJOY a MW for once.

How many of you think that 1GHz is the maxed out top speed of the 7455? Will there be a bumb between now and MWNY? MWNY is only 5 months away. I think April 30 will bring new speed bumped iMacs at 800 and 1GHz and iBooks at speeds of 600 and 700. Because MWNY will be all about PowerMacs and PowerBooks. And DDR and bus speeds. I don't know about 7460's and 7470's and 7500's but I think by then HIP7 would have been on line for a while pumping out 130nm SOI G4's with a faster bus. Maybe not DDR but faster than 133MHz.

    PowerMacs between 1GHz and 1.5GHz

    PowerBooks between 733MHz and 1GHz

I don't think so. It took iTunes 10 months to get updated. We might get a point release, but I'd bet that 2.0 might make it to MW Paris.

I remember before I discovered rumor sites, how I heard about the new macs second hand through macworld or macaddict, or saw only clips of the show. i was wow'ed by anything, even the old beige boxes [oh the horror].

the boards here really do ruin the show i think. like before mwsf this jan, w/o rumor boards i probably wouldn't have expected g5s et al. others' inside knowledge from friends of distant relatives who've once smelled a sealed test box, raise my expectations. people whine about what apple should be doing, based on their own wants, and declare apple could.

i don't think people should lower expectations to the point of apple releasing the newest, greatest iFecalMatter, so that if apple does do anything they'll be happy. people should make reasonable expectations. every so often, apple will boost the speeds. how much they do it, or at what increments is a guessing game, to b left to motorola. sw revisions can come at mw's, too. we shouldn't expect anything too specific, b/c we don't konw and can't possibly know whats to happen.

they'll do something. it'll b cool. i'll want to buy one.
