I also vote GameCube. I have one and love it. I can't believe no one has mentioned Super Monkey Ball I & II, and Super Smash Brothers Melee. These games are the most fun you can have with four players. They are also fun for single player.
If you don't want a gamecube, I would vote PS2. Have you used the XBox controller? It really sucks. I can't even hold it well and it starts to hurt after a while ( I am not that small a person so that isn't the reason ). PS2 is not going to go away no matter how much M$ pours into XBox. Sony has a little bit of money too and a huge installed base ( PS2 is currently outselling XBox by about 4:1 ).

I think its the entertainment value that matters the most. Grand Theft Auto 3 has so much replayable value. That game never gets boring. Tekken Tag is another.
I have a PS2 and haven't had one single headache with the memory cards. I don't really see the point in a harddrive on a game console. The cards are fine.
Face it, the Xbox is a PC. Its going to have problems like a PC. The PS2 is a game console. Thats what it was made for and thats what it does best.
How are you "buying for the future" if you buy an Xbox? Hell if you bought a PS1 all your old games still play on a PS2. I'll bet you anything Sony keeps it that way and you'll be able to play PS2 games on the PS3. Do you think MS will do that? Possibly, but most likely they'll shaft you.
well, to put it quite simply i would have to same GameCube no question.
the reason? it's a hell of a lot more fun, at least with multiplayer games. i don't buy a console to sit alone and whittle away hours, i want to cream my friends and mock them while battling it out. by far, the funnest multiplayer games are on the GameCube. among all my friends someone has each of the major consoles, and every time we get together for a gaming night, we end up spending the vast majority of our time playing the GameCube.
(the only exception being some of my friends who are obsessed with DDR, not the memory)
1. Real graphics card. Compare how different cross platform games look (e.g. Turok, Battlecry). XBox absolutely spanks the PS2.
2. Dolby 5.1 digital sound on the XBox. PS2 has nice stereo. One day you might have a really good stereo and want to take advantage of it.
3. Coherent online strategy for the XBox. Online ability + LAN ability out of the box. PS2 online strategy is best described as "ad hoc". Online mech warrior. In one year, online Halo 2 (drool).
4. HDTV support. This is a feature that is being supported on upcoming games, and all your old games will still play on an HDTV. You aren't going to keep that 4x3 tv for much longer, are you?
5. Halo. Yes, the game is that good.
6. Personal reccomendation- I have both an XBox and a PS2. I have used the PS2 for nothing more than Final Fnatasy 10 (I am not a GTA fan).
7. MS isn't getting out of the market anytime soon, they are here to stay.
8. Better quality games. Sony's strategy is to flood the market with games, most of which are poorly implemented. Go with either Nintendo or MS who control what games are released.

3. Halo, plus they have a bunch of new games coming like Splinter Cell which will make Metal Gear LAME.
4. 5.1 surround sound. PS2 can do it but you have to buy some extra hardware.
5. Any game the PS2 can the Xbox can do it better.
7. Blinx will be a great platformer and have a bunch of nice features. It may be the best platformer game out when it is released.
8. You get 4 controller ports instead of like the PS2 you get 2 ports.
9. With a Build in HD you don't need to buy memory cards.
10. DVD Playback has better quality in sound and picture. So what you if you have to pay 30$ for the DVD kit, you would still have to pay at least 20$ to buy a remote and stuff for the PS2.
11. You can copy your music to the HD and listen to your own music while you play your games.
12. With the clock it allows games that are enabled to use correct lighting depending on what time of the day it is.
13. I have more reason but I think this is enough.
The PS2 is good they have some nice games but the Xbox IMO is a better value. I am sure the PS3 will be some nice things but I'm not a PS2 Love like a lot of people I could care less if MS has their name on it like that matters.
Okay guys, I got my Xbox Live kit today and it was like a ghost town online. Kind of spooky actually.
It came with a game called 'Revolt' which is also available for the PS1, PC, N64, and Dreamcast. Basically, you race around in 'remote control' cars, but it has a racing feel to it. Supposedly, this game is no longer going to be available for the Xbox, and no one was on the servers.
The other game it came with was NFL Fever 2002. Again, no one was online, but I think it's because the real version of Sega's NFL 2k3 and the full version of NFL Fever 2002 use Xbox Live and I can't get into those games.
As for a keyboard and mouse, the Xbox does not support these. Microsoft has been trying to 'prove' that the Xbox is not a PC and the lack of a keyboard and mouse is something they encourage.
The Dreamcast has an official keyboard and mouse and there is a keyboard and mouse available on the PS2 (but can't be used on many games). The GameCube will have a keyboard available for at least Phantasy Star Online.
Back to the Xbox, the kit came with the voice communicator which you can use to 'mask' your voice if you want. It also means you don't have to use split screen mode for multiplayer (but the other person has to have Xbox Live, a copy of the game, and be at their own house). Still it has some good looking games coming out such as Unreal Championship.
Overall, I'd still recommend the Nintendo GameCube over the Xbox or PS2. Personally, I like the games more. A lot of Xbox games that have come out have really been mediocre, but Halo is really good (of course).
I wouldn't really worry about any of the consoles going away soon either. Nintendo was the most profitable company in Japan for the last few years, Sony has billions invested in the game market, and Microsoft doesn't even plan on making money until 2008 (or something crazy like that). They aren't like Sega which almost went broke with the Dreamcast.
Also remember that GTA 3 and GTA Vice City are 'exclusive' to the PS2. You won't see those games on the Xbox or GameCube (but GTA 3 is on the PC).

true, there is a bit less action oriented games on gamecube, and more cartoony but fun games....if the purpose of your choice is to be entertained then a gamecube is great, since most of the games for it are just pure entertainment....but thats jtus my bias I guess.
If you just want to game --> PS2, cause it's not Microcash and can play old PSone games.
If you like messing with electronics --> Xbox, cause you will(will as in not yet, but hopefully soon) be able to run Linux on it. The xBox IS a computer, one that runs a moddifyed NT kerrnel(and get a Green Screen of Death). What better way to filp Microsoft the bird than by buying a computer they lost $150 making. And then not buy any of the games they planed on using to make the money on.
Man I loved the DC I bought the DC over the PS2 to hold me over in till the xbox was released. I ended up selling my DC for 50 to my bro it had 2 controllers, 15 games, 4 memory cards and a keyboard.
Who ever said GTA 3 is exclusive to the PS2 you are wrong they have it in the making for the Xbox but it won't be out for a while. Of course Xbox Live was dead right now it's in beta and the only way you can get in to Xbox Live is if your a beta tester and by the sounds of it your not. The xbox live kit comes with NFL Fever 2003 online ver. along with a couple other games and a headset. I know this because I get my Xbox Live beta kit in a couple weeks.
My personal choice has been GameCube, and I'm not disappointed one bit. Games like Eternal Darkness and the best version of Resident Evil... all the sports games... Sonic, Mario, Zelda and the like, while aimed at younger audiences, are still fun.

I REFUSE to play any FPS games (UT, Quake, RtCW, MOHAA, etc) with a damn controller.
