No, Nintendo bequeathed the B-K, PD, and Conker licenses to Microsoft over a week ago. This is old news.

I'm to lazy to read all the posts in the thread, but I'm buying a PS2 with Devil May Cry, Silent Hill and Silent Hill 2.

Silent Hill is some scary shit.

Wow, reading the news, I was surprised to see that MS bought all of Rare. Let this be a sign for the naysayers who think MSis going to walk away from this market in one year.

The thought of buying all three consoles is actually not that bad an idea, if you have the money. It does seem a bit redundant of course, but then again my PS2 is essentially a FFX box.

Interesting development. Starting today MS will start bundling a smaller game controller and games with the XBox while Nintendo starts to market towards an older audience.

Xbox is in the .sit: the Japanese market hasn't taken to it (the original target of the smaller controllers, and their wider release is a blessing, since I damn near broke my wrists playing Halo for an hour), PS2 is still outselling it 8 to 1, 90% of the games are crap (I don't care how good it looks, gameplay is the key) and the recent panicky price-drops do not inspire confidence.

Certainly Microsoft will keep throwing money at the machine (Bill doesn't like to lose), but don't be surprised if Xbox goes the way of the Dreamcast, Atari Jaguar et al... Kevin Browne has just left his position as head of M$'s Mac Business Unit to head up Xbox: does that say anything?

The latest I heard is that Sony are holding back on the development of the PS3 since they figure they don't have any real competition.

The concept of the games market supporting more than two console platforms was nice, but I suspect we're going to see history repeating.

Thing is, Xbox has taken the standard M$ formula and applied it to the games market: do the same as everyone else, but pervasively and with more of everything. More polys, more MHz, more hard drives... fewer sales.

i think it'll be very interesting to see what happens with Nintendo's sales when Metriod Prime and Zelda come out. both huge franchise titles that have been dormant for a while. (Metriod for much longer)

both look good, and knowing Nintendo's love for FUN gaming, i think will be a blast to play. you never know though, MS might pull it off.

i think the one place Nintendo has always shot itself in the foot is backwards compatibility. having cartridges really hosed them in that arena. it would have been really nice if people who owned original systems could keep playing their games after they get a new console.

especially great original Nintendo games like North and South, that are hard to find.

Kinda sucks, I agree, I think a neat holiday pack would be for nintendo to encourage N64 classic, disks. With 1.5GB of memory slapping an emulator and a handful of ROM images onto a Gamecube disc shouldn't be that hard.

Interesting that this thread is still around since I last posted. The most recent update on my own situation. My g/f and I were bored this weekend, and thought "hey, gamecube's only $99 after eb mail-in rebate, let's get one".

So, we read some game reviews, and went to the store. Unfortunately, the only game either of us really wanted to try was mario sunshine. (on consoles, platformers and mario kart tend to be our favorites).

So, instead of getting a gamecube (which kinda bummed us out) and thus paying $150 just for one game, we decided to get "the sims", which my girlfriend seems to have played straight since saturday morning! I sit next to her playing age of empires (I'm REALLY just waiting for age of mythology, and won't need another game for a long time).

If metroid and/or zelda get good reviews, we may buy a game cube. Until then, it's PC games and maybe an occasional xbox rental.

if you want fun, and if you like the sims you should rent Animal Crossing. that game is hard to describe, but tons of fun.

for other fun games, you really should read up on Super Monkey Ball and Super Monkey Ball 2.

and i'd love to see some major titles burned to a cd. that card game thing for the GBA is cool and all, but i want my zelda on the bigscreen.

I would go with the PS2. It has games that will entertain you just as well, or more, as halo would. Halo is just another 1st person shooter game that everyone is band-wagoning on since it is the only decent game for x-box. PS2 all the way.

Once again another pointless diss towards Xbox.

well, that's not quite true.i rented an xbox a few months ago, and of course got halo, since i was told by everyone this was THE game to try. and it is great, but for the reasons that made ALL bungie games great - kick ass action, decent graphics, great game play and an awesome story.

quake3 and unreal tourney were the plateau in my opinion of the mindless shooter regime. without a decent story, you may as well be playing quakeiii or unreal tourney. i have heard, however, that quake on the console sucked horribly from everyone i have talked to. i also never got to play half-life, but see it for the ps2, so i am tempted, but everyone still says it stinks. apparently it does have support for keyboard and mouse, though. i am tempted to buy an xbox simply because id says doomiii will come to xbox. honestly, though, it's super-creepy, but the same damn story from practically all the other doom and quake games (if it can be called a story). unless it's got a new enemy type with every level, it gets old fast, no matter how gorgeous it looks. i might change my tune if it is multi-player on xbox, though.

i am in a similar situation, where renting a console and games is inconvenient (lugging it home on transit or by foot sucks), so i want to buy one, but only want to put down money for one. i think i am more in the mold of your arcade-style player, with hi scores and such ruling the day. adventures and first-persons are cool, except i get stuck 3/4 of the way through every one i play because some dick level editor decided it would be cute to hide the exit three stories up and you only see it briefly if you happen to look straight up and too your left while firing the rocket launcher bullshit. grrr...

hey, the ps2's built-in dvd player is very tempting, too. i've got my pismo, but its dvd player is tempermental at best.

anyone know of any on-line comparitive review that are not total sellouts to one one maker or another?

addition: damn, just saw the movie trailer for xmen: new dimension, and it's coming out for all three consoles. damn. that looks like an incredibly wicked game (especially for me, since i grew up on xmen comics)

you shouldn't even have to think about this. What has a better rep for good products? SONY! what has a better all around game base? ps/ps2.

    GET A PS2!!!!

GameCube all the way. To reiterate what others have said, the GameCube's games are simply more fun and have better game play. Plus, last week I had a friend visiting from PA, and he was able to pack his GameCube (4 controllers + 4 games) and enough clothes for 10 days in one small suitcase. You need an extra carry-on for the X-box's controller alone.

Plus, am I the only person who finds GTA3 amazingly tedious?

At the end of the day, it's very much a subjective decision, based around what kind of games you want to play, which brand you feel an affinity to and what franchises are available on which hardware package.

Everyone sits around throwing MHz, polys/second and so forth around (sound familiar?) but it's the experience that makes it for the individual, and will guide your choice.

As for the RARE purchase, it's not really a positive sign. Nintendo sold because the founder and main creative force of RARE is retiring. This was a desperation move by MS.

If you really have $200 burning a hole in your pocket, I think your two best choices are the GameCube or the PS2. Not necessarily the PS2 itself, but Sony has the best future of any of the consoles. They are driving the market and it is the others that need to react.

doesn't mandrake have a boxed version of linux for xbox shipping nowadays? how can you install linux on a ps2 if all it has for storage are memory cards? or did the joke go sailing over my head???

anyway, i was about to buy the ps2 last night (toronto's sony store), but then i noticed the addtional costs mount up quick. memory cards, online module, extra controller... i need to break out the calculator now.

The PS2 Linux comes with a 40 GB HD. The Xbox Linux requires a mod chip to operate.

    sorry it took me so long to post... i was busy vomiting from the outburst of MS support. &lt;gag&gt;

ps2=more choices. with the exception of mario, every game i could ever want to play is out on ps2. if gamecube played dvds, i would get that in addition to ps2. as great as the gamecube games are, i can count them all on my toes. i dont care which system has a HD or connects to the internet...cuz i have my computer for that. i really dont care if one game might be slightly different on another console. but if youre a real game geek and are going to be that nitpick-y, then buy all them all. <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />
