byte hasn't written much about the mac for a long time, but that could change now it seems.

Is this really a trend? UNIX/Linux user "switching" (or adding to their setup) to Mac OS X. What's your take?

EDIT: spelling/gramma

I am now typing this column on a Mac G4 Powerbook (800 MHz with 512-MB RAM, a combo DVD/CDR and a gorgeous 14.1 inch screen)

The powerbook has a 14.1 inch screen?

I've read a few accounts where linux users have switched to OSX. What has always amazed me since OSX got released is the crying I've heard from some of the linux folks for apple to port Aqua to X86. <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />

Ok, I think I have to explain why this article is of particular interest (at least to me). I used to subscribe to BYTE Magazine, way back (started in 93 or 94...can't remember) until it went upside down (was it 98 or 99? damn my memory is slipping, oh well...). They actually had a quite extensive mac coverage back then.

The magazine started in 1975 and was considered one of the greatests authorities on technology. Heck, they even invented the term "PC". (no... not "politcal correct"!... )

When they stopped the print edition and went .com only, it kinda went downhill. And they almost completely stopped covering apple and the mac. So reading this article is a sign of things changing (to the better) I think - or hope.

It also made me fell a little bit nostagic of the good ol' days (97) when you could buy a PowerMac 9600 with 350 MHz 604e (a KICK-ass machine!!!) and Intel Pentium hadn't even broken the 300 MHz barrier. Oh, those were the days...sigh...

anyway, I'm getting a little carried away, better stop now.

That was the one thing that stuck out in the article when I read it. Obviously, it's a typo.

Byte was pretty good, back in the day. When I was at school, it was pretty much compulsory reading. I remember the old Gateway advertisements, when they showed the entire staff of about twenty.

    It went waaay downhill.

And I never liked Jerry Pournelle. He's an ass.
