System outage prevents adding Visa cards to Apple Pay

Apple reported an unusual network problem on Wednesday, preventing some owners of Visa credit or debit cards from adding them to Apple Pay.

Difficulties began shortly after 4 a.m. Eastern time and are still ongoing, according to Apple's official system status page. As is normal the company hasn't identified the cause of the issue, or said when it might be resolved.

Crucially, people who already have Visa cards listed with Apple Pay should still be able to make payments online or at retail.

While Apple regularly experiences outages with services like iCloud, iTunes, or the App Store, Apple Pay is typically immune. To date there has been no major downtime for the service, and indeed only a small subset of people are currently being impacted.

Apple will expand Apple Pay's footprint throughout 2016. In the U.S. the service should reach new merchants like Chick-fil-A, Starbucks, KFC, and JCPenney, while elsewhere it will continue to gain its first toeholds in countries like China, Spain, and Singapore.

Clearly, Apple is doomed because ApplePay is a failure anyways and Tim should be fired!

Any possibility that maybe the issue is on Visa's side since it doesn't appear to affect Mastercard, Amex or Discover???

I want to know what is holding up major banks like Fidelity and Bank of the West from joining Apple Pay? Especially Fidelity which uses PNC Bank to process their cards, and PNC already accepts Apple Pay. Get your heads out of your posteriors banks and give your customers access to their own money by our preferred method!

I wish Visa and MasterCard Australia would get on board with Apple Pay. I think the sticking point is that Apple isn't willing to concede on their portion of the transaction. But Apple is not bringing as much to the table here as they did in the US.  Visa already receives a lower amount per card transaction and contactless payments and the terminals to support these have been relatively ubiquitous. It now works with Amex, but not the bank-issued kind, which is pointless.

The whole situation has been one of very few disappointments with my iPhone 6 Plus.
