German coal & power firm RWE plans to use up to 1,000 iPads under Apple/IBM deal

A German coal and power corporation, RWE, is planning to deploy up to 1,000 iPads through Apple and IBM's MobileFirst partnership, a CIO with the company's generation unit said on Tuesday.

Field workers at RWE's Hambach mine started using iPad minis in December, Andreas Lamken told Bloomberg. The company has so far distributed a "couple hundred" iPads, he said, and in the next several months will deploy more at two other mines, followed by utility workers.

The use of iPads is intended as a cost-cutting measure, as the German electricity market is proving tough for RWE. Prices are at their lowest point since 2002, and the country's shift to renewable energy is impacting profits on "dirtier" power sources like coal, gas, or nuclear.

Lamken noted that in the short term, the Minis in use at Hambach are saving about 30 minutes a day in paperwork. In the long run, RWE is hoping to make repairs "predictive," and shorten commute times by dispatching workers based on their current location. The Hambach mine alone measures over 11 square miles, making it easy to waste time by dispatching someone on the opposite end of the site.

RWE is the first energy and utility client for MobileFirst, which was launched in 2014.

Apple and IBM are offering over 100 iOS apps tailored to different business demands. Hardware, software, deployment, and support duties are split according to the companies' specialties.

(I'm a regular... needed to anonymize myself a bit as someone could figure out from my handle to my linked in to my corp relationship, and they want to announce this at their April Investor Call).

    I'll see your 1000 and raise 5500.

Our US Home services company just started the rollout of 1200+ iPad Air 2s to their salesforce, and all their >5000 field techs are getting iPhones this year, replacing much older 'portable terminals' for pulling up work detail.  I'm working with this team to expose their old mainframe app to their new iOS app suite.   The first 150 iPads went beta this week  (I'm sitting in on the feedback session for UX right now;-), and the remaining 1100+ ipads go out before April 1.   The 6000 phones will go out starting in May.

    Thanks for posting this.

I've been trying to gauge the market for enterprise-focused iOS developers, as Apple expands into this market. Your story is a good data point.

Yes, mentioning coal and Apple products in the same sentence as 'coal' seems jarring doesn't it?  I always laugh when I hear the term 'clean coal'.
