Hmm, Switch campaign oddities...

Okay, I decided to check out the Switch site at apple.com. I've already noticed some stuff that seems a little odd:

1. Ellen Feiss claims her PC went "beepbeepbeepbeep", and then half her paper disappeared. Has anyone witnessed this type of occurrence in the wild? I don't think any PC I've ever used has "beepbeepbeepbeep"ed. Ever. And I've never had stuff disappear from my word processor unless I've done something really stupid.

2. Fabiola Torres claims she uses iTunes to "record speeches". Can you now record with iTunes?!

3. Janie Porche says her Dad spent Christmas afternoon downloading Windows drivers. Why didn't he just use the CD-ROM provided with the camera?

Actually, I noticed that bit by Miss Torres the first time I saw it too.

Maybe she's actually been beta testing the new iTunes 4.

    Maybe not.

Miss Feiss, well, the beeping was probably in her head the whole time. Yeah, I'll bet that was a really good paper, hon. Keep telling yourself that.

As for Miss Porche, maybe she just wasn't smart enough to think of that.

Hey, you guys aren't implying that some of the Switch ads might be spreading... untruths?

You said it yerself, 90 percent of computer problems are user errors and there are less user errors on Macs<strong>

</strong> Maybe she meant that she recorded them into her computer, then used iTunes to catalog them. Not everyone knows correct termonology<strong>

Who carries around the CD-ROM? She did not just get the camera, did she? I know I have CDs for my things stack away in a closet.... also, they may not have been the most up-to-date (Windows XP) drivers...

    Alt/DeleteBEEPControl/Alt/DeleteBEEPControl/Alt/DeleteBEEPControl/Alt/Delete

    BEEPControl/Alt/DeleteBEEPControl/Alt/DeleteBEEPControl/Alt/DeleteBEEP

    Control/Alt/DeleteBEEPControl/Alt/DeleteBEEP!

damnit artman, you should know better than to post something that's gonna screw the board settings.

    fix it!

    ok, for the ads.

the ellen feiss ad, i would guess her machine locked up solid. then when you press a key it just beeps at you after the keyboard buffer has filled.

then the machine will spontaniously puke. and you're hosed. i've seen this a lot of times, although less lately. the only other thing would be that the powersupply, heatsink or controller chip fan wasn't working up to snuff. your machine will beep at you as it overheats in those cases, until it locks up and pukes. this one is usually much worse, and you'll often times lose data.

the iTunes one doesn't make any sense. you can't record in iTunes to the best of my knowledge. and i've poked around a while looking.

the last one, with the windows drivers.

i would bet that he bought the camera, then got the computer. the camera didn't come with specific winXP drivers. he'd probably installed the drivers from the CD, which didn't quite work in winXP, then got the winXP drivers, which didn't quite work with his hardware for any one of a dozen reasons. so he wastes a day trying to fix his driver problem even though he has his CD that came with his machine.

    3. did she buy a MAC compatible camera or wtf??? i spent 3 weeks looking for drivers for the graphic soap (board) of trust.. that was a "mac compatible" (yea.. os 9) product.. the winzoz drivers were in the cd she didn't use... her cup-holder was busy? she had put her gluchwein on the cupholder of windows?

Thew closest thing I've seen to Ellen's problem is when an error comes up, and refuses to go away. That is, you click "OK" and it keeps popping up, unable to exit the loop, or once it kept popping up over itself (the alert widows cascade). In either case, the solution was to use force restart.

I can't imagine what Fabiola is talking about. I thought she was doing something I never bothered trying.

And some of your text just vanished?

Yeah. I've lost text from documents I've been working on through freezes and crashes because it wasn't saved, but I've never had the situation where the text just vanishes from the screen.

This wasn't really supposed to start a serious discussion. I was just pointing out that these are gross oversimplifications of the situations, and quite possibly Microsoft could argue they're unjustified and inaccurate.

WRONG, hehe, my pc would crash while doing word proccesing all the time. It was indescriminate. it also liked to crash during recond setting pacman games. and the do beep when the crash, it likes to alert you i guess, as if you didn't notice. mine had two tones, beep boop beep beep. then it would shut down after flashing its blue screen. its true, the evil world of them dangdarn pcs.

After using word for several years i can tell you yes it can happen and yes it has happeend to me, if you spend a while on the document it woould autosave thne if you crasha dn the keyboard buffer gets all ****ed then moving a mouse would be "all like beepbeepbeepbeepbeep" then when you reboot word would open from the last autosave usually about halfway through a document, so yes that could happen very easily

I think Elen smoked her paper, and then forgot were she saved it.

1.) i haven't seen the ad so i don't know if the beepbeepbeep'd went hand in hand w/ the paper disappearing but...

hearing beepbeepbeep when you boot up a pc is a function on some motherboards telling you that there's a problem with either the video card or the memory(i can't remember which as it's been awhile since i actually encountered this problem). It's a way to self diagnose itself.

Some motherboards have a set of led's that will give you a readout and you can find out what it means by comparing it to what's in the manual. Other motherboards actually have a 2 digit display readout as well. It varies.

    2.) dunno about this one

3.) It could've been an older camera that predated the current os they were using.

Don't worry, Belle, I don't think of anything here as being serious.

Anyway, I should point out about the Janie Porsche (or however she spells it) piece, that her dad sounds a lot like my Dad. He's a Windows utility and driver junkie! His behavior stems from the constant troubles he seems to have with his Dell, though we're not sure if the downloads are the cause or the effect of the problems. It's a kind of chicken-or-egg thing at this point.

It happens in almost any OS I've seen...when you string together lots of commands and the computer can't keep up.

That's a bit of nitpicking, I think...By "record" she probably meant "store." She sounds bilingual, so her English probably has some flavor to it.

Maybe the camera model is over a year old and the CD still doesn't come with Windows XP drivers. I just bought a brand new HP LaserJet 1200 from Dell.com and the CD only has software for Windows 95/98/2000/Me/NT 4.0 and Mac OS 8.6-9.0.

I actually had my Win2K Pro machine beep at me while I was at work. It was the bad kind, too, where the motherboard beeps.

That happened twice in one day, actually, and I never figured out exactly why. Needless to say, the only solution both times was a hard reboot.

Ellen might have meant that when the computer came back up, half the paper was gone. Or it could be one of those random Windows 98 things... I've seen Win 9x crash in so many fascinating ways that I didn't even blink at her description.

... maybe her "cup holder" of her pc was occupied, maybe she had some xmas drink on that so she couldn't search for the windows drivers that were on the cd which she got when she got the camera <img src="graemlins/embarrassed.gif" border="0" alt="[Embarrassed]" />
