Internet Browsing: Mac vs PC [Again!]

Can anyone give us some link to some serious comparison on how the platforms do against each other for Web Browsing, JAVA speed, ActiveX etc. I have both Mac and PC at home and the PC Used to be my preferred choice when browsing around cyber space. In fact the PC left my old 'G3 the dust, just felt so much snappier and faster.

However, I'm not sure this is the case anymore. Yes, the PC may have the edge over the Mac but I don't feel the same amount of gap between them. Where can I find some statistics to backup this feeling of mine? Or am I just plain wrong here?

I doubt there are many statistics that work...as i would agreet that the PC used to be faster, but recently with Chimera and 10.2 things have changed. I don't think anyone has had the time to do serious testing in the last few months though.

    Maybe you could?

Ooo ooo, I know this one. There is a very good comparison out there that I just saw a couple of weeks ago. Going to find it now.

In my experience/opinion there is no comparison. The PC is faster browsing the internet. No question about it, but it comes down to explorer being built into the os instead of sitting on top of it. My fiance bought a new iMac 800/superdrive and won't even use it because browsing is too slow compared to our pc. So I had to buy a router so she could browse "faster". Now I am the only one who uses the Mac.

Why are you complaining? You have the imac to yourself now!

I was using some PIIIs (700ish mhz) at school for browsing today and i can say with quite a bit of confidance that my 333 imac running chimera and 10.2 is a faster browsing experience. Than again high school computers aren't the best machine to judge by seeing howas students mess them up all the time.

As much as I like Mac, PC is absolutely faster in internet browsing.

Martin Jungowski has done the best review/benchmark I have yet seen which should put lots of doubts to rest. Furthermore, WinXP by default is not optimized for broadband. (See <a href="http://www.tweakhound.com/supertweaks8.htm"; target="_blank">http://www.tweakhound.com/supertweaks8.htm</a>; and <a href="http://www.dslreports.com/"; target="_blank">http://www.dslreports.com/</a>; .)

Anyway, Martin's review is at <a href="http://www.ocparadise.de/"; target="_blank">http://www.ocparadise.de/</a>; where he compared the following:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.2.1 (Mac OS X)

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.2.2 (Mac OS X)

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.1.6 (Mac OS 9)

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 (Windows XP)

Mozilla 1.1 (Mac OS X; Mac OS 9; Windows XP)

    Chimara 0.5 (Mac OS X)

iCab 2.8 (Mac OS X; Mac OS 9)

    Omniweb 4.1.1b (Mac OS X)

    Opera 6.0b1 (Mac OS X)

His conclusion? Mozilla 1.1 for Windows had the best overall score. I personally use Mozilla 1.1 as well (on XP, W2K, and OS X 10.2).

I wonder how well the Mac browsing would have done with the machines a little closer in specs. Web browsing isn't exactly altavec enabled.

I am so glad to see how well Mozilla did. I use it on my Mac and PC. It is insanely fast on both. It is faster on my PC but then my PC is 1300 mhz and my Mac is 500 mhz ( and a laptop to boot)

My Mac G4@500 with Mac OS 10.2.1 is roughly a second behind my PC when rendering identical web pages. Usually no more than 2 second behind and again that is on a laptop with fewer mhz and over airport as well.

Sure web browsing on the pc is faster, but jeez, is it ugly. All that aliased text flying around everywhere. It's just plain nasty. Personally, I'd take my mac running 10.2 and chimera any day.

Airport should make absolutely no difference unless you're on a line that's obnixously fast (like OC-3 or something). Most broadband connections top out at 2mb/s while Airport can get 11mb/s. You would have a hell of a hard time saturating an Airport connection.

exactly, browsing in windows is ugly. .. konqueror gives something btw mac and pc as the graphics (not sooo ugly yet u see the color scrolls etc) .. i cant x ex. do a comparison here: the modem is only working with windows. so maybe i'll try the sppeds in net... how fast does a p2 linux / win and ibook do with all their browsers... yet the speed then? can i calcolate eg the speed to get the command "copy image url" ..?? for that (only that) wins opera for win.. if i'd get that command on the apple key in chimera i'd use only that. as i dont see taht alternative... omni, ie, .. opera, icab... <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> ... too many ... (notive this un-chapterising: i lsot the cookies in chimera so this is how opera "reads" the line breaks= doesnt.

His grading system is kind of stupid, as instead of averaging load times over a lot of sites, he added all the sites load times together--since there were only a few sites tested on, if the browser choked weirdly on one (like Chimera at the Apple Store) it looks like it is dog slow, whereas in reality it is very fast, but still a beta.

Nevertheless, he certainly did a lot of work--I wonder if he will keep it updated?
