Apple Posts A Loss For Quarter

Posted:
in General Discussion edited January 2014
As previously hinted by Fred Anderson, Apple posted a loss of .13 a share. If non-recuring costs were not added, it would have been a profit of 2 cents a share. . If you read between the lines, things are not as bad as they may seem. The whole industry is suffering but Apple still has tons of cash and continues R&D. Here's the info

agreed, i understand what it means, but a loss is a loss in the shareholders' (and wall street's) mind, so expect some pretty heavy sell-offs in the next, oh, 15 minutes...

...and pick up some deals on cheap stock tomorrow morning folks. apple's got so much cash in the bank, they're still fine for quite some time.

Curious. There would be a very slight profit if not for the one-time costs. That's what sunk 'em.

What exactly was "a write-down of certain equity investments totaling $49 million" anyway?

I am not an accountant, but looking at the year as a whole looks good all things considered, if they post a large loss next quarter then there may be something to worry about. As it stands now this quarter's loss appears to be a balance sheet move due to decisions in previous quarters. Steve's new jet no doubt did not help the numbers either. <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

tired of the bullshit they keep spewing how powermac sales suck because of the hard economic times we're having.

know they aren't going to come right out and say, our pro product isn't good enough and people are waiting till it is but to just keep saying the same thing and sales to just get worse and worse is ridiculous

Interesting to note that Apple is reporting an operating loss for both the quarter and this fiscal year. The only reason this quarter/year would've shown profits is due to interest on their cash reserves. Operating losses are not generally considered a sign of a healthy business. But no one is faulting Apple for have a hard time during the current economic climate.

I've seen notes on Macintouch that Apple is not honoring InDesign rebates, etc. Perhaps some of these write downs involve more people taking advantage of previous rebates than Apple anticipated.

    If Apple resorts to bait-and-switch, I'll be P O'd

With Apple's immense cash position relative to its stock value, you have to expect that when the economy is tanking its investments will drag it down as well.

I think a lot of economists can see past that...some sites are reporting the info (accurately) by saying that Apple met estimates:

    <a href="http://cbs.marketwatch.com/news/story.asp?guid={854C6280-980D-4D72-89D5-B5FD4DE9ABF2}&amp;siteid=mktw&quot; target="_blank">CBS Marketplace: Apple Meets 4th Quarter Estimates</a>

So I don't know if the selloff will be that extreme.

But isn't it lucky that apple's pro line sucks so hard during a time when not many people could buy anyway? Think about it: if Apple had released what we've been waiting for during this economy, there would have been an initial surge followed by a sharp decline.

Hmm, that sounds familiar. The iMac G4 was one product we were all waiting for, most of us love and would have snatched one up in a second when the were first released. Now, it's gathering dust and not entirely because of it's specs. I'm counting my blessings (as a shareholder) that Apple didn't release ANOTHER kick ass computer and have it not meet expectations.

The Powerbook was a big loser. It dropped from 94K units last quarter to 58K this quarter. I think the MHZ gap has hit the Powerbook side. People don't want to pay $2499 for a 667MHZ machine. The good news is that Apple can probably bump up the processors from 667MHZ and 800MHZ a good deal and get these sales back next quarter.

If people don't wanna get a 667MHz machine at that price, do you really think many more people will pay the same price for a 800MHz one?

I think 867MHZ and 1 GHZ instead of 667 and 800 would do a lot for sales.

One thing Apple really should do is put out a lower end 17 inch LCD iMac without the Superdrive. Spending $1299 or $1199 for a computer and getting stuck forever with a 15 inch LCD is probably the reason LCD iMac sales have dropped. They should put out a 17 inch with CD-RW and GeForce2MX for $1499.

Jobs says "we're hoping to help put a lot of iPods, iMacs and iBooks under trees this holiday season"

It starts with lower prices. Across the line. They've started with the iMac already, but you can't tell me that they wouldn't sell a sh*tload of newly speedbumped G4 (yes G4)800mhz 14" iBooks for $1999.

It wouldn't hurt...anything is better than the current value or lack of it.

So much for that whole "the computer industry sucks right now but apple is still making money"

Apple has to make sure that they have a update product to sell each quarter. This quarter they want to put a lot of iPod, iMac & iBook under the christmas tree, well maybe the iPods(I'm geeting mine in 2 weeks), but the iMac & iBooks specs have not been updated in quite a while (except addinf the 17" screen). Apple should have updated the iBook in late august (Back to school) and the iMac early October (Christmas).

People due put off buying Macs when they been out for 6-9 months with no real increase in their specs.
