FBI has yet to find actionable intel from breached San Bernardino iPhone, report says

A report Wednesday claims FBI agents have not yet discovered useful information from an iPhone 5c linked to last year's San Bernardino terror attack, a device that just last month was at the center of a high-profile court battle involving Apple.

According to a law enforcement source familiar with the matter, data extracted from a passcode locked iPhone used by terror suspect Syed Rizwan Farook has yet to produce a breakthrough in the FBI's case, though the agency's analysis is ongoing, reports CBS News.

In February, Apple was ordered to assist FBI efforts in accessing Farook's iPhone, but the company resisted. Government and law enforcement officials pushed the issue as part of a media blitz, suggesting Apple's move might put citizens in danger if the device were to contain vital intelligence about accomplices, or plans for a follow-up attack.

While the Justice Department never claimed knowledge of the target iPhone's contents, the government molded this uncertainty to promote a sense of urgency in resolving its public fight with Apple. In light of calls to give to FBI requests, the company did not bend and maintained that the creation of a workaround to its own security protocols would imperil millions of iOS device users.

The motion to compel Apple's assistance was ultimately rendered moot when an outside party presented the FBI with a working exploit capable of extracting Farook's data.

Today's news comes one week after FBI lawyer James A. Baker refused to comment on whether or not agents had found "useful" information from the cracked device.

"It was worth the fight to make sure that we have turned over every rock that we can with respect to the investigation," Baker said. "We owe it to the victims and the families to make sure that we pursue every logical lead."

Anyone with half a brain and even partial knowledge of the circumstances surrounding this case could've made the determination that this iPhone was useless because the suspects wouldn't have used it for anything incriminating!!!

How do we know the awakened dormant cyber pathogen isn't making them say that?

Good point. The fact that Comey has been asking for weak encryption is because he is sick in the head.

The only surprise is that this leak was not 4:30 pm on Friday afternoon to make sure it was lost. Now it'll pop up on Thursday's news screens "FBI Learned Nothing From iPhone" And learned nothing from a lot more. But most folks have not a clue about that :(

HA !! I'd forgotten about that. That dork should be fired for incompetence. Problem is that his manager is probably no more competent, and so will not.

And even if they did its not like we don't know who did the shooting. plus anyone that was a terrorist that was contacted on that phone would have booked it out of dodge before they could get caught if they thought there was a slim chance the burner phone number or whatever could be used against them

Yeah.. I thought they would have found this at least. It's dormant after all.

The argument is not about this phone but setting a precedent for the FBI to be able to access any phone when they need to. This phone was just the vehicle to get them there. Although in the end, they knew they were not going to win so they back off in an attempt to save face by using another tech company.

Shocking (eyes rolling).  Also, since it is the FBI's job to protect citizens of the United States, shouldn't they reveal the exploit used to hack into the phone to Apple in order to protect us citizens?

Yeah because the suspects were masterminds and wouldn't have made any mistakes.

Couldn't Apple hire third parties to hack into the phones to determine their weaknesses?

You might try keeping up with the news. This was a local official that had brought up the "cyber pathogen" as a possibility, not the FBI.

No because they made a point to destroy their personal phones and computers.  They were thorough maybe not masterminds but thorough.

Let's say for shits and giggles that the FBI did pull valuable information and was able to prevent another attack, would anyone opinion about the unlocking or the FBI be any different? Would any of you have changed your mind about Apple's stance? Of course not, you would just find something complain about so why is this still being talked about...nothing, absolutely nothing would make anyone feel any different, you people just need something to complain and be mad about...

I know the mods frown on two-word posts, so I'm padding this out a little:

    Imagine that.
