The chinese put a suicide net around their apple facility to prevent employees from leaping to their deaths. Maybe the cupertino facility needs to figure out how to keep guns away from their employees.
You signed up and used the death of an individual to spread your hate of Apple. You truly are a sad person to do that.

Get your facts right as the Foxconn factory is not an Apple owned facility and it was actually products made for other companies who required the factory suicide nets.

    I disagree.

Suicide needs to be spoken about. So that those who feel it may be necessary also feel free to talk to those around them.

I dealt with a lot of software engineers (code monkeys) in my previous job and many of them were socially and personally troubled.
So true! The desire to blame apple for these deaths, be they in California or China is pretty foolish. Healthy people don't go around killing themselves, it really is that simple.

Why not? Hiding stupidity never improves life for anybody.

I have seen some genuinely disturbing comments here and elsewhere WRT this sad story. People making jokes or trying to link Apple's earnings to this or evening trying to link this to the Chinese factory suicides (which were highly motivated by the payouts factory employees' families would get in the case of a suicide). It is highly offensive and makes light of a tragedy. He was a human being that we literally have zero insight into why he chose to take his own life and people think it is ok to say whatever they want.

I wish articles like this weren't even open to comments because it leads to the worst of people coming through.

It is called gallows humor and frankly it helps people handle bad situations. Talk to a fire fighter about some of the things they have seen and you will understand where cracking a few jokes can go a long way to reducing the stress of reality. Reality is that people often die in fairly gruesome ways. Beyond that have you ever heard of insurance, many plans have exclusions for suicide but many don't the end effect is the same as what happens in China, somebody gets a fat paycheck over someones death.

The offense is largely in your mind. It is unfortunate that somebody takes this route but a rational view taken would cause one to realize that the planet is over populated and as such this death is insignificant. The idiot here is the guy that took his life and frankly it is right and proper to make light of his idiocy.

As for your wish for censorship, you can shove that idea in some dark place. We have in this world far to many people that want to silence the message instead of debuting a reasonable rebuttal. The tendency to go PC in this country sucks and frankly it is something that needs to come to an end.

People like this in the US who value profit and corporations above humanity and have lost any sense of compassion are what have prevented me from ever wanting to move there and contribute my skills to a society which I find absolutely disgusting.  Keep smiling and faking that you're laughing with others while, underneath the facade, you have zero interest in those around you and simply care about getting as much as you can for yourself.  Every time I travel to the US, I constantly have my guard up because any time I interact with someone, I feel like they're only interested in me as so far as they can get the money out of my pocket.  Not enjoyable whatsoever because there's almost no humanity left.  It's all been stripped away in the pursuit of the almighty dollar.  Pretty much my definition of hell on earth.  Good for you, you win the game of capitalism -- doesn't make any difference in the end.  And what will you remember when that time comes?  I guess it doesn't matter if you never reflect on anything anyways.
Why would anyone be interested in you?   Frankly we don't nee you or anybody else for that matter moving here, we need to fully employee the people already here.   More so moving here would imply a willingness to separate people form their money which you seem to abhor.   The whole point of an economy is to get people to get people to churn money.

Not sure if anyone before me reported, The CNN news reported it as suicide by gun shot, which explain some of the other report we hear early on about it was a shooting.

One suicide (for which we don't know the cause) is not an indicator of "workplace conditions" one way or another at Apple. Apple has a responsibility *to a certain degree* in terms of ensuring a safe and healthful workplace environment, and then beyond that they aren't responsible for someone's personal choices.

Some of the comments in this thread are eye-wateringly stupid, which is actually far worse than deliberate trolling in this case, because the former is not good news for general brain function.

They are also now reporting that he was recently reassigned to the iTunes for Windows product team.

Software Engineers aren't actual engineers with ABET accredited degrees. They are either Computer Science degree holders, a subset of Electrical or self-taught programmers. The industry lost a lot of respect to me and lots of my colleagues when Software Programmer was converted to Software Engineer by folks with Liberal Arts, Biology, Psychology, you name it degrees. It's a title that should not exist. My personal most loathed one is Software Architect, a.k.a., the guy/gal who outlines the requirements technical writing with very loose classifications that lower level folks turn into working APIs. They get paid the most and do the least.
i probably agree with you on the former, but your latter point is not accurate. thinking and designing on a paper is a thing. it's better to design your new framework/API on paper *before* you start coding. that is a fact. you can discover and work thru problems long before tying yourself to the baggage of code written. this will save money and poor design decisions. (not saying the design or API won't change later, thats fine. but there is definite value in designing it first). just like how construction builders dont just go start building first -- they follow the specs given them by the architect. it's a real job.

Let's not jump to conclusions. Suicide can have many causes that are external to the work place. I have seen happy and functional people plummet into depression due to a great loss either financial or of someone they loved. I have also seen what depression does to people.

I can appreciate some people trying to make light of something as a coping mechanism but when I read elsewhere a comment like "he was Hispanic so good riddance", that's not gallow humor. That's flat out racism. When someone signs up here just to say something derogatory, that isn't productive.

What I am saying has nothing to do with being PC and everything to do with being a decent person. Just because the anonymity of the Internet exists doesn't mean people should be a-holes.

Although the cause of death has not been released, one cannot entirely dismiss the possibility of trouble within Apple having driven this young gentleman over the edge. That remains true even if pressure and stress doesn't cause "most people" to take their lives. Consider a software engineer suicide from Apple's past...

    http://www.nytimes.com/1993/12/12/business/marketer-s-dream-engineer-s-nightmare.html

Although SIRI may have had nothing to do with this recent death at all, SIRI is in many ways is terribly flawed, not too unlike handwriting recognition on the Newton. The pressure within Apple to create the insanely great may very often drive the engineering geniuses behind it to the edge of sanity.

1993? Twenty-three years ago, as an example of anything whatsoever?

"Although one cannot entirely dismiss...Siri may...in many ways...not too unlike...may very often".

You may, quite possibly, be reaching, because you have no valid point to make.

Sorry, that's utter nonsense. Perhaps you should travel to other places in this big country, away from NYC.

If you're going to sign up to post, at least get your facts right. NOT an "apple facility", a Foxconn facility, manufacturing things for many different tech companies.

    so it is suicide.

He obviously premeditated that he wanted to do it at Apple hq...so whatever was his issue(s), it is clear he believed Apple was responsible.
    No, nothing is "clear".

    Yes, clearly.

And all the people who throw themselves on train lines must have a serious beef with the line operators.

And all the people who jumped from the terrace of this restaurant:

    http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/man-plunges-80ft-to-death-from-roof-garden-of-top-city-restaurant-coq-d-argent-a3158911.html

all had a problem with the chef.

You know nothing about this you man's life; you know nothing of his mental state. You know nothing about what happened to him in the preceding hours/days/weeks/months/years that drove him to take his own life. If he left a note or a message that indicates Apple is responsible then I expect Apple to investigate the matter fully and see if there is anything they can do to prevent this happening again. But again, this is unclear. The only thing that is 'clear' is that you don't know what you're talking about.

Folk, I understand that a lot of you hate Apple with a passion that my meagre intellect cannot ever hope to fathom, but let's remember that a young man has died here. Trivialising this man's death by using it as a stick to gleefully beat Apple shows that perhaps you need as much help as he did.

    Beautiful post.

The analogies with trains and the restaurant are not that great... but the rest of the post is spot on.

If indeed suicide, I'd wager it was a culmination of personal issues and some petty workplace issue that triggered a manic episode. If firearm related it could have been a premeditated attempt at a murder / suicide / workplace rampage at the office and he just changed his mind at the last moment. I just can't imagine an engineer bringing a gun to the office every day unless he kept it in his car. In any event, I don't suspect it was job pressure (unless he was terminated) even when Jobs reigned over the engineers like a mad dictator, nobody killed themselves and Apple has become a lot softer since then.
It's impossible to know and dangerous to say things like this. Very often, suicidal people tend to hide their true emotions and by definition, have issues that aren't easy to diagnose. Additionally, I doubt he was terminated as he wouldn't be allowed into an on campus conference room. You can't even get past reception if you are not badged or escorted.
He could have shown up for work anticipating being terminated and gone to the conference room just after getting the news instead of to his desk or office to gather his things. People do seem to have a sense when things like this are going to happen. My point was it seems unlikely that an engineer would have a gun on them in the office on a daily basis and that its presence indicates a culmination of some ongoing issue and not a snap reaction.
