    Mmm ...

Seems to me that Apple needs to find a way to make a profit from users of Facebook and other social media ...

Facebook will be the king of all Ad's over Google in 2-3 years, but that is all, the end for Google is when Apple actually executes on hardware/software again. (car?)

So you are suggesting Apple threaten to ban these services unless they hand over huge chunks of their revenues? Seems a quick way to the courts and bank breaking fines.
You want Apple customers to become the product? Become just like Google and FB?
What reality are you living in?

Au contraire, mon frère -- Apple could send these services to the next level while making the service the product instead of the customer -- as it should be.

    Exactly.

Google, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, are all laughing to the bank.
They are all making BILLIONS on the backs of iOS users.  Without iOS users these companies would die on the vine.

Its time for Apple to play hardball and get a better chunk of the pie.

No need to do that just don't take money from them or feature them as the default. Let the public type it in most will not.

    I'm talking about 2015 profits.

    2015 Apple profit $53 billion
    2015 Facebook profit $4 billion

There is nothing for Apple to emulate, Facebook's profit will catch Google profit wise in 2-3 years but thats it. Without hardware/software execution neither company will be close except for, on the Wall Street casino.

How is Apple controlling it all?

Google is worth more than Apple right now by $80 billion.

Apple just wants its fair share.
    So 90% isn't a fair share???
Apple has 90% of smartphone hardware business in 2015.
That has gone down so far in 2016,
And will probably go down more each year.

But on the advertising/services side Apple has almost no share.
Let me ask you this: Does a single company controlling so much of the world's wealth give you even the tiniest bit of unease in the pit of your stomach, silly tho it might be to anyone at the moment? No matter the best intentions to choose what's best for "us"...

I fail to understand Apple's difficulty in getting social features integrated into their music services, other than they continue to be overly controlling of the experience. Artists have left it alone because it is unnecessarily difficult to sign up for Connect, to post new material, and it's so isolated from the rest of artists' social media presences, it's not worth their time. An aggregation feature, as another reader suggested, would make a lot of sense.

On on a slightly different subject, Apple is going to continue to suck at services until they learn to play nice with others.

With all this talk about advertising -- maybe that is changing too:

Interesting ... I rewound and re-watched a couple of these to pick up some subtleties.

Good! That was a terrible idea from the jump. There are already too many social networks where artists have to post to stay relevant. The smart move would be to tie Apple Music's social functions in with Instagram, facebook and Twitter.

What can't Apple just buy Shazam?  They are really killing it in the music social sphere right now.  The best musicians are usually the biggest music fans themselves.  A lot of people (admittedly probably not a lot of AI readers) follow their favourite artists on Shazam and see what they are tagging.  It is a great way to find new music.

I liked the idea of Connect, I just think that think that artists don't really need a new social network.  I think Apple needs to acquire one, along with keeping the talent in-house with strong contracts.

Because $250B laying around just ain't enough. . . More! More! Don't stop until Apple is the last standing and controls it all! 90% of the profits just isn't good enough. Fire Tim if he can't take 100%!

Does that about sum it up?
    Right!

    I do miss Ping.
It just needed its own app. I don't get it why Apple gave up on it so quickly. I mean, look at Tidal ...

You are being far too reasonable of a person gatorguy.

This technology stuff is pretty much a religion these days. Replete with wishing death upon your enemies. For "us" to win "they" must lose and "we" won't stop until "they" are dead and gone.

The schadenfreude among the various camps of fans of technology is startling to me. And yes, to use your phrase, it gives me a a bit of unease in the pit of my stomach - mainly about humanity in general.

It's not enough to have ones own personal preferences and enjoy ones own purchases and decisions. If someone thinks a different product or service serves them better then the they must be attacked or at least ridiculed!

Maybe we should start an actual war and kill each other over cell phones and email clients. Attack each other like drunken hooligans on the street. Now I came here to kick some ass and drink some beer, it's too bad you like Chevy and I'm all outta beer!

I suppose I am glad for things like these kinds of forums, which seem to give a place to vent. But the fact that people get so worked up in the first place about this stuff will never cease to amaze me.

For me sports is another good analogy. As much as I want to see my team win, what I really want to watch the most is a great game.

I think Apple should try to coax artists to be more interactive on Connect. For example, just before launching Drake's album, rather than him just promoting it one-sided on Beats 1, they should have arranged for an interactive chat with fans via Connect.

That would have created a buzz for the album and the service.

I personally don't listen to Drake, but the fact that his album sold over 600K copies in the first day shows that a small thing like a chat on Connect would have really been a shot in the arm for the service.

And I'm using Drake as an example because his album is/ was an exclusive on iTunes for a week and his tour is being co-sponsored by Apple.

Apple is too passive with Connect. They said that it is a place where artists can interact with fans. They shouldn't leave it all to the artists.

Get Taylor Swift to announce something exclusive on Connect. A link to a video or song only via Connect. Granted, it will find its way onto the Internet almost immediately, but it will create buzz.

Use Iovine's clout in the industry for stuff like this.
