[quote]Retailer Best Buy is aiming to take a bite out of Apple Computer with the release of a new, wide-screen notebook designed by Porsche.

The VPR Matrix 200A5 is the third notebook Best Buy has created, and it's the best. It's also the first Windows notebook with a wide-aspect, 15.2-inch LCD with a 1,280x854 native resolution and a remarkable, high-fidelity digital audio system. The $2,399 system also includes a 2GHz Pentium 4-M, 512MB of DDR SDRAM, a 40GB hard drive, a combo CD-RW/DVD drive, and integrated 802.11b wireless networking. It all comes in an eye-catching, silver-magnesium case that weighs 6.4 pounds and measures 13.9 inches wide, 10 inches deep, and 1.2 inches thick.

Well i guess it took a car company to put together a laptop that could match the sexy-ness of the TiBook. Yet this is just not as attractive as the powerbook, im sorry.

Note the slot-load CDRW/DVD, 2ghz P4, and DDR. The specs are nothing to scoff at.

I don't think that the car company had anything to do with that.

Porsche Design on the other hand might have

Exactly, many automotive companies farm out their deisgn staff for other works but Porsche Design is one of the most well-known and active ones.

s/Porsche/Apple/ - Other than color, that notebook apes the TiBook quite closely with the widescreen, metal finish, the screen hinges, the button lay-out. The power button looks to be in the same place even.

Porsche Design has nothing to do with the car company - it was founded by the carmaker's grand son, F.A. Porsche, but he did design the 911 though when working at the car company.

They come sooo close to outright copying the PowerBook, then go with silver and black, and stick those stupid little Intel and Microsoft stickers on the palmrest? Then, they try to mimic the PowerBook by going with austere straight lines rather than a curvy design, but fail to notice that the PowerBook doesn't have sharp corners, but instead uses subtle curves.

Yet more proof than anyone can copy or steal, but taste is relatively rare.

It looks too fussy for my liking. I think it's the stickers near the keyboard and the jacks and lights on the front edge. Only small things, but they make it look cluttered. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Looks better from that angle, especially if the ports are covered by a flap. Not sure about the scratch on the top though.

Regardless of what it looks like, it still runs that crappy OS.

Look at how much space that keyboard wastes on each side....

    ugh.

VPR (Value, Performance, Reliability) is a joke anyway. I see them come back into Best Buy all the time for repairs. They aren't nearly as reliable as my beloved Titanium. And they arent made of Titanium, they are made of that cheap plastic stuff. No DVI, no gigabit ethernet, weighs 6 lbs., and most of all, NO OSX. Unfortunately, there are a lot of uninformed, and if Best Buy has anything to do with it...MISinformed consumers who might consider the VPR. However, I doubt that Apple has anything to worry about...

who the hell would want 1.2 inches over 1 inch?

those people are crazy, it is an outright steal... "the first windows notebook to have a widescreen 15.2 inch display." but, what about the first notebook? not them, DAMNIT!

    apple needs to be doing some mud sligning, seriously, it may not be a nice thing to do, but these people are out right stealing good designs just enough so they can not be sued~! <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> <img src="graemlins/surprised.gif" border="0" alt="[Surprised]" /> <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

I don't think you'll be seeing a lot of them around. The PC market is strange. Off-brands don't sell well in laptop forms.

But what I do like is that Best Buy comes in, hires Porsche, and makes a decent PC laptop. Dell has been trying so hard, so long, and still can't get it right.

Geez, just copy Apple already. How come it took so long?
