New Apple Store

I am surprised to see this. Currently Apple has an Apple Store in Minneapolis @ the Mall of America which is where I bought my iBook. Now they have another Apple store in Southdale Minneapolis which is about a 30min drive from the Mall of America. Sales must be good in Minneapolis for them to open up a second store.

I'm not sure if it was mentioned here at AI or elsewhere, but someone asked an Apple Genius the rationale behind having two Apple Stores in such close proximity. The reply was that Southdale and the Megamall have different demographics - those who generally shop at one mall don't shop at the other.

But, like you say, there must also be some pretty good business around the Twin Cities for two such stores.

I wonder how this second Apple Store will affect the business at FirstTech...

Cool pics. I had some of the Apple store in the Mall of America once but I don't know what happen to them. I will have to stop by the southdale one some time soon maybe tomorrow. And yes we need one in Duluth I'm only an hour away from Duluth and I am 2 hrs 3 mins away from the cities. Sucks but it was worth the drive last time.

I thought Bloomington wasn't quite in Minneapolis.

Ron Johnson showed up to the Southdale grand opening!

Bloomington is a suburb about 10 miles due south of Minneapolis proper.

btw, the shopping mall its in is called Southdale Mall, the suburb is Edina, and its more like 15 min from the MoA, then again, knowing traffic on 494, might as well say 2 hours to be safe .

does not look as nice as MOA store...

    minnesota isn't alone:

    <a href="http://www.apple.com/retail/tysons/"; target="_blank">Tysons Corner, VA</a>

    <a href="http://www.apple.com/retail/clarendon/"; target="_blank">Clarendon, VA</a>

i'm sure there's a good reason. it looks like apple REALLY researched EVERYTHING when they went into the retail business

The Southdale store is a 2.0 store.

They're much smaller (and less expensive) than a 1.0 or super store - like the ones in SoHo and The Grove.

FYI - I read an interview with a Starbucks honcho once who was talking about the way they cluster their cafes (there are 378 starbucks in Manhattan). He basically said that if you put a few starbucks near each other income more than triples per cafe compared to having a single cafe by itself.

Perhaps Apple is using a similar approach...

Staffing for the Southdale Store is mainly people pulled from the Mall of America Store, they didn't hire any new Geniuses for the Southdale Store but did hire more sales people [and still are]. It has been hectic for the retail hiring staff because they opened like four stores this weekend.

Yeah, he lives in Edina, the Ron fellow and was at the MOA opening... I still have that video around here somewhere.

::sniff:: I like the old store better... the big screen in back I thought was a major cool draw... how are they gonna do the demoes and tutorials now?

oh well, I think I will go and try and get a holiday job there anyways

Apple has pulled a lot of good people from Target, the manager of the MoA store came from Target and is now the cheif manager of the two stores.
