Learn to write for the audience: does your teacher prefer OSX or XP?

For my freshman english class at university, my final paper was basically a sales pitch for a PowerMac G4 (back when they topped out at dual 500) comparing to the PC options. My professor had zero experience with Macs but actually gave me the impression that she was now (or rather then) considering buying a Mac after having read my paper. After class she actually asked me some more specific compatibility issues about making the switch.

    Hell yeah.

Anyway, as for this subject, you might should try apple's "Switch" pages. Sure, they'll be a bit biased, but they do provide some good information on compatible file formats and comparing feature sets.

Screw writing for the audience, write what you believe, find good evidence and back it up. If you write just to benefit from the bias of the reader then you will not do your subject any credit, nor will your writing be as good or as true as if you write of your own validity and passion.

I assume you're writing for HS? Is it for an English or Comp.sci class?

Generally good advice, but there are some teachers running around who prefer sycophants to free thinkers. Others resent the brown-nosers and prefer the original opinion. Ideally, the writing should stand on its own merits, but that is not always the case.

Since it is the teacher who is going to rule on the paper's merit, step 1 is to analyze the teacher and figure out what viewpoint will put him/her in a positive frame of mind when grading it. An unfortunate part of the game of being of student.

I don't believe in "playing the game." I have succeded and failed because of this, but in the end merit is merit. A person who says stand up for yourself but buckle when it gets hard has no character.

The smart move is often as you described but the smart move is not always the right move.

Go read the Think Different quote and feel inspired my friend, Apple wasn't talking about computers, they were talking about a life philosophy.

NO, Apple was concocting BS in order to sell you over-priced machines. Weigh the situation, write for the audience (if it's a writing class), doesn't mean you have to pander to the teacher's whims, but it helps to know them nonetheless.

Writing for the audience and writing what you believe are both equally important. I am a senior in college and have done very well on papers which agree and disagree with with the prof believes. The most important thing is to have good information to support your thesis. That way you will limit the teachers opportunity to mark you down. Good Luck! btw Hi all, finally decided to create an account and join the fun!

    Matsu,

Reading the Think Different statement doesn't make me want to buy a Mac. It makes me want to strike out and change the world. That was the point. But if you hate Apple as much as your cynicism demonstrates ... why do you own a Mac and why do you post here?

Seriously, try to lighten up and enjoy things, the world is not out to screw you. And besides, if your premise is correct and Apple is screwing us all and selling over priced computers then you are just another one of the suckers since you own a Mac.

Try to see some positives in things.
