Apple releases Safari 10 beta for OS X El Capitan and OS X Yosemite

Apple issued beta versions of Safari 10 for OS X 10.11 El Capitan and OS X 10.10 Yosemite on Thursday, granting developers access to new features like enhanced Safari Extensions, a redesigned Bookmarks interface and more.




Available through Apple's developer website, Safari 10 for OS X Yosemite and El Capitan presents an opportunity for those unwilling or unable to download the recently released macOS Sierra beta a chance to test out the next-generation web browser. Safari 10 will come bundled with Apple's new Mac operating system later this year.

Apple is asking developers to focus on the following areas during their evaluation:

  • Safari Extensions
  • Development of Safari App Extensions
  • New Bookmarks sidebar, including double-click to focus in on a folder
  • Redesigned Bookmarks and History views
  • Site-specific zoom
  • Improved AutoFill from your Contacts card
  • Reader improvements
  • HTML5 and legacy Plug-ins
  • Allow reopening of recently closed tabs
  • Spotlight suggestions for Top Hits
  • Back closing spawned tabs
  • Improved ranking of Frequently Visited Sites
  • Web Inspector Timelines Tab
  • Debugging using Web Inspector

In addition to the above, those evaluating the software on OS X 10.11 El Capitan are asked to concentrate on development of Safari App Extensions and Spotlight suggestions for top search bar hits.

Apple introduced Safari 10 at the Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month, highlighting key features like picture-in-picture video viewing and "Buy with Apple Pay" web transactions. These more advanced features will be exclusive to macOS Sierra and are therefore not available in today's Safari betas.

Developers can download the latest Safari 10 beta by visiting Apple's Developer portal.

    It's a bit sad to see no mention on compatibility with new web standards, or something like that, in that list of evaluation.. Mostly focusing on their own thing. I hope they'll catch up. That Chrome browser is pretty damn snappy and compatible right now.

    What is the big difference between Safari Technology Preview 9 and Safari 10 Beta? I understand that they both contain Apple's proprietary iCloud integration?

    I'm simply asking, why do they have two separate trunks to produce builds from, if both will compile for El Capitan and Yosemite? WebKit is confusing...

    I sincerely hope that the new bookmark UX is vastly better than the existing one, which is rubbish. They could just port across the bookmark system from Firefox and I would prefer it. In particular the lack of drag and drop into the bookmarks bar is so archaic.

    I love all the features of Chrome, but Safari 10 opens faster than any browser I've ever seen.
