Porsche expands Apple CarPlay support with 2017 Panamera

Porsche has announced that its upcoming four-door sedan, the 2017 Panamera, will support Apple's CarPlay technology when the vehicle launches in the U.S. in January.

CarPlay will be controlled through a 12.3-inch touchscreen, part of a new Porsche Communication Management system, the automaker said. That system will also handle built-in Porsche features, such as proprietary voice control.

Along the same lines, the car is being fitted with the new Porsche Advanced Cockpit, which replaces many buttons and instruments with screens and touch-sensitive panels. On the Panamera, this will include two 7-inch displays within the driver's line of sight.

Notably Porsche hasn't announced any support for Android Auto, which is now almost universally supported on any car that also has CarPlay.

The base version of the car, the Panamera 4S, will start at $99,900 before any fees. A top-of-the-line Panamera Turbo will cost at least $146,900.

Being a high-end sportscar maker with a smaller model range, Porsche has relatively few vehicles with CarPlay support. So far these include the 2016 911, 2017 Macan, 2017 718 Boxster, and the 2017 718 Cayman.

Porsche didn't like Google's terms and conditions.
    Surprise!
They didn't like Android Auto recording data on vehicle performance characteristics, then sending it back to Google.
    Typical intrusive Google creepiness.

Porsche claims that the Panamera Turbo is the fastest production luxury sedan on earth, lapping the Nürburgring Nordschleife at 7:38.
Just 1 second faster than the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio (which barely qualifies as a "production" sedan anyway.)

    Panamera 0-60mph times:
    4S: 4.4 sec.
4S: 4.2 sec. with Sport Chrono package
    Turbo: 3.6 sec.
Turbo: 3.4 sec. with Sport Chrono package

Porsche belongs to a company that cheated consumers and governments worldwide. They're lost all credibility.

As a side note, a friend of mine has a brand new Porsche Macan with Carplay. Carplay works great. However, when you plug an iPhone, with the car's language set to French (this happens in Paris),you can select "Appel Carplay" on the dashboard's screen (instead of "Apple Carplay"). An "appel" in French is a call, which might explain what this was not detected and corrected :-) However, it is still very weird to see such misspelling in a Porsche!

Porsche claims a 'ring time on par with some of the best super cars. Last time I heard, Model S's time was on par with some sub-$30k hatchbacks...
