For the third time, since my music collection is larger than the 5GB capacity of the iPod, I want to pick and choose my songs from the iPod itself (assuming a capacity that would allow storage for my whole collection), rather than from my computer. The difference here lies in carrying around a complete music collection rather than a partial collection, respectively. The question is not whether 1000 songs is enough in the context of a complete collection, but rather the same question in the context of an incomplete one. The answer, of course, is no.
A shell that won't be scratched by a fingernail would be nice. I doubt that Apple can make a srface that doesn't hold fingerprints, though.
iPod original model is sellng quite well. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Or update it. There's still money to be made, I give it another year before some other MP3 player gets big.
I think iPod 2 will be pretty much the same; give it a 50 Gig drive and a better case and you're golden.
maybe, just maybe mnind you, Apple will choose the new iPod to showcase a NEW STORAGE METHOD. I'm talking Holographic storage, baby! The storage medium is a small crystal with very precise optical properties. It writes as fast as te FW drive can transmit, and will go faster. It can't be degraded unless something goes and bashes it. Maybe Apple will release the first Personal Terabyte unit. Woohoo! Never mind MP3s, just give me DVD-Audio and DVDs!
It needs a mic and a voice recorder to be the perfect music storage device. In fact, to me at least, it's small enough that if someone made a firewire attachment that included these two features -- perhaps in a jacket type enclosure, or something that clips on, folds over it, whatever, even if it nearly doubled the overall size -- If someone made such a device with line in, a built in mic, and whatever software/additional DSP was needed to get both a good AIFF and MP3 recording. I'd buy it in a second.
There's simply too much small stable storage there for the thing not to be able to record my own sounds.
AIFF for musicians, and MP3 for those who need to record voice: doctors, lawyers, students, journalists. No more messy tape or puny ic chip recorders. Maybe an IBM/dragon/lernout voice transcription app to run on your mac as a bonus: tape now, transcribe later.
In the first revision iPod should graduate from a toy to a tool.

price the 5 gig at like 300 and the 10 gig at like 450
give the 10 gig microphone and advertise it as a pro iPod type deal.
There are new ones that might take up less space. MPEG-4 audio? What about all the formats that Apple can bring in through a firmware update?

One of the mpeg-4 audio codecs is AAC which I believe is around mp3 quality at 1/2 the bitrate (or so). When Apple settles its liscensing hassle with the mpegla they can release a flash update for the ipod and add aac to itunes.... you just doubled your disk space right there!

Archos' latest monster...is just that

but then again I just did some research and sonicblue rio and creative Mp3 players are WAY behind...though for hold a few cds the rio 800 is Awesome

No compression technology will ever make files that sound quite as good as the original audio source, no matter whether it is Beethoven or N-Synch.
however 10 gigs suits me just fine....so bleh!
