Can't wait any longer. When's the next G4 improvement?

in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
It appears the G5 is decades away. Does anyone

have a reasonable estimate on when the very

next G4 will be released? As a musician, i need

as much power as humanly possible, so the 1ghz

dual just won't cut it. Will the bus speed up soon? Maybe a minor speed bump? within 2 months?

Yeah, I'd buy if they just put a new MB in there and a bump to a dual 1.2-1.5 G4. Any hope of us getting this by the end of March?

As a musician, what exactly are you running that runs sluggish on a DUAL 1Ghz?!?!? I'd sure love to know. Just give me a few application names so I can check em out.

Have you checked out a dual ghz Mac?

They're pretty snappy. If you have a store near you with one you really should check it out before deciding it's not fast enough.

I don't think there'll be a speed bump until MWNY in July.

well, we all need something...but seriously, have you used the new dual 1 gig machines? if you haven't, then how do you know they "just don't cut it"? if you have used one, then you've done something very few of the people here have done...and that's drive apple's fastest mac. what can i say, if that isn't fast enough for you then perhaps you need to look elsewhere.

i have a couple of good friends who create and score music for broadcast. they're using MIDI with logic, composer, and a bunch of other apps. right now they have a dual 500 and they would absoutely love a dual 1 gig. either your needs are greater than theirs, or you've underestimated what can be done with such a machine. i agree you need answers, but it sounds like the person you need them from is yourself. no offense.

    Did Mozart need a G4?

There is no way you'll see a new PowerMac before May at the absolute earliest. MWNY is more likely, but still not guaranteed.

I agree with the other's comments... have you even evaluated the dual 1 GHz to see if it can do what you want? It is a howling fast machine for audio work given the dual AltiVec units and big/fast L3 cache.

Please refrain from underestimating the human mind. His brain and yours is infinately more complex than a G5.

Please refrain from taking jokes seriously. In powerdoc's line of work, he knows a little about the brain.

BTW, the G5 is faster than the brain (RAM speed is faster than neural transmission), and definitely has a lot more RAM (compared to the capacity of human short-term memory).

Nor did he ever produce a Jingle, not something anybody - not even Mozart - could do with just pen and paper.

I would say no earlier than MWNY, and no guarantees they'll show up then either.

That gives you plenty of time to get to an Apple reseller and put a dual gig through its paces. Those things, I can now testify from personal experience, are mindbogglingly fast.

Finally checked out the new iMac and the dual Ghz in person today

Yeah, the Dual Gigger is VERY fast on Photoshop 6 and After Effects 5.5 but still blows in 3D compare to PC

But I do do many things other than 3D anyway

The problem is. If I really want it I have to sell BOTH my DP 500 and my iBook to cover the cost

No amount of computing power will make up for bad music. Why don't you turn off the computer and spend more time practicing?

As a musician, you're full of shit. I know plenty of recording artists with Blue-and-White G3's. Buy some PCI cards.

I'm a musician and soundtrack composer and I agree with nepo. The more power, the better. I use a G4 500MP running MOTU Digital Performer 3. When I use Native Instruments Reaktor and Absynth, 1K Multimedia SampleTank, Cycling 74 Pluggo and Kind of Loud RealVerb with DP3, my system is maxed out. And that is only one instance of each softsynth. It would be nice to run multiple softsynth instances within DP3. If I wanted to use AltiVerb ( a physical modeled reverb) instead of RealVerb, there would be no way my system could handle that. Going up to a dual 1GB doesn't make much difference. When future Macs have 2GB+ processors running a 400Mhz+ memory bus, then we'll start seeing a whole new series of music production apps. Like maybe the equivalent of a full <a href="http://www.symbolicsound.com/brochure/index.html"; target="_blank">Kyma</a> system running natively without external processing hardware.

All the more reason to use real instruments in place of synthetic ones. And to practice more.

    Thanks that's all falk.

    BTW

there is no comparison between a chip and the brain. Brain was not scheduled for mathematical calculations (the frontal cortex , is the lattest evolution of the brain, the one who permit us to be here dealing on AI), brain is involved in many different task including the humans senses (vision, earing, smelling, touch, taste) the locomotion center, (motor cortex and associative ...: when you move your arm, automatically there is plenty of muscles involved including those of the shoulder, chest ...) the emotions, the memory, the instinct ...the reason barely represent only 5 % of the brain activity.

Clock speed : hmm 50 hertz, equivalent in bits : 10 000, numbers of transistor like : billions, way of functionning : analogical, others features : neurotransmetors.

So the brain is far better for many task, even a G5 will have a lot of problems to let work in a good way a robot (very primitive) but a simple scientific calculator is far bette for addition and multiplication ...

We are definitively analogic in a monstrous complexitive way.

PS : for the RAM difficult to say, we use analogic RAM that store various thing including the taste of food and various others things ...computers are for better indeed to store logical informations. But i canno't store our feelings.

No he just produce fantastic music, just with the instruments he have, a pen, paper and a fantastic brain who was able to playback a whole orchestra.
