The music industry needs to realize its better to get 200,000,000 subscriptions at $5 each than 50,000,000 subs at $10 each. Once you get massive adoption then you can slowly increase the price. Cause at that point people will be 'addicted' to the service.
I agree with your first point though I don't think the industry will unless forced. As for increasing the price once hooked is that legal?
That's the idea. They'll use this as YET ANOTHER loss leader to grow their own hardware sales to encourage more impulse buying.
Isn't that what Apple, and Microsoft with Office to encourage Windows' sales, has been doing for ages? Apple's apps and ecosystem do encourage people to buy hardware. Mind you, Amazon seems to be doing it in a more traditional retail way.
They are running hundreds of other business to bankruptcy because they sell things at a loss. Its ridiculous that the justice department does nothing to stop this anti-competitive behavior. How is anyone suppose to compete with Amazon if they simply sell things for less and lose money on every sale. But of course Amazon is one of the biggest contributors to politicians.
They do seem to have been playing the loss game. On the other hand many, not all, of those businesses that closed treated their customers poorly for years until people realized they had a choice. Amazon's customer service, return policy and convenience is really excellent. I doubt people want less.
Having a $5 Echo service is really appealing. Many of us love the Echo family. Apple could learn a trick or two from Alexa. Siri, in my opinion, has never been that great.

I don't know, I think Siri is always great. It's fun too. Apple certainly does not need to copy others.

$10 is generous. Do you know you can keep copy of any songs from Apple Music offline, within any devices (under your account)? I have literally a million albums with me all time. Tell me again if $5 is the right value for that.
There is an easy option here for Apple given they already have iTunes match (2.09 per month) they could offer something in between at say $4.99 a month.
Not full access maybe not even user select-able access. Thinking something targeted at iTunes users who already have a good library and prefer to directly reward the artists but want a streaming service as new music discovery system.
iTunes Match with access to all the programmed radio stations and say one Personalised radio station that mixes your music with new release and albums you don't own from artists in your library.

$10 is not unreasonable for what you are getting. I personally don't need a million albums with me and in any case portability is not a priority.
As for Siri, I just have never taken to it and very few people I come in contact with use it. Maybe I should give it another shot. I just find Alexa far more enjoyable.
Apple does need some new ideas. They have become staid.
