Need USB 2.0 pronto!

Does anybody know how I might go about adding USB 2.0 to my iBook. I was thinking of implementing this over Firewire (my only option, actually). So my question: is there a small and payable USB 2.0 to Firewire bridge available somewhere?

sorry, i dont think you can do anything to get USB 2.0 on your computer... this is why it should be STANDARD...

The only computers (to my knowledge) that can get USB 2.0 are those with PCI or PC card slots... (Power lines)

maybe the original iMacs with the Mezzanine slot, but i doubt it.

one of my great annoyances with Apple. There is no reason whatsoever (or is there?) to withhold us from USB 2.0. Crap!

USB 2 was developed through Intel's desire to make the USB platform faster. While they were able to make it faster, they sacrificed stability in the process. I doubt Apple would ever ship a Mac with USB 2 because of it's stability issues.

Doesnt the new G4 towers ship with USB2?

If you have firewire why go for USB2?

Im sure if you asked a technician somewhere they could knock something up.

    Yawn.

There is absolutely no urgency in getting USB 2 into new macs and Apple knows this. There is nothing special about USB 2, and firewire is still better in many, if not all scenarios (DV, Hard Drives etc.).

I imagine at some point USB 2 will find its way into macs as standard, but its not like theres a rush.

Dont get your panties in a bunch

why are you choosing to go with USB 2.0 instead of F/W?

Because I'm (probably) getting a great deal on an Archos 20 GB mp3 player/recorder. Only downside: usb 2.0 (that is: if I want fast transfer - I guess I'll sit it out for now - it'll be probably faster than writing a cd and then have that skip all the way while 'being active')

Um, not to be a style junkie or anything, but all of Archos' product are hideous. Really, why is their MP3 player better than an iPod?

It's not, and I wouldn't dare to make that claim, but: I think at least the price on this one (I MIGHT get) is right (300 euro for a 20 GB model, instead of 650 euro for the iPod), and it is a RECORDER. Functionality that the iPod lacks completely. **** elegance, this'll go in as deep a pocket as I can find, and that's where mp3 players belong.

Will it be possible to upgrade usb 1.0 ports to usb 2.0?

Or is this a hardware issue?

I guess if you're referring to some firmware update to make your usb 1 ports into 2.0, this will not be possible. It IS a hardware issue, and unless you open your computer and manually replace them (or add a pci card if you have a tower) you will not enjoy the benefits of usb 2.0 untill apple says you are allowed to. Where's the 1984 ad when you need it?

I don't know how it is in europe, but I just ordered a dvd box set from amazon.ca from the US without problems. Looking at the archos 20GB on amazon, the uk price is over twice as much as the US store.
