blast from the past : apple's NeXT move
Another great article from the past. This time from a 1997 edition of Fortune magazine in which some 'in the know' predicts the failure of Apple acquisition of NeXT. A hilarious read!

How wrong the writer was. . . .
I love the fact that he explains his apparently deeply vested interest in Be at the top and somehow manages to write an entire article assuming that it somehow doesn't affect his credibility on the matter.
He wasn't far wrong at all. In fact, it was a very perceptive article, and not Apple bashing at all (eg. John Dvorak style).
The fact was that Jobs was _not_ part of the deal, and (if Alsop has his facts straight), Jobs made it clear he would not be involved in running Apple.
What nobody could have foreseen was Jobs coming back to Apple and seizing control again.
He was EXACTLY what Alsop said the company needed, a visionary with complete control over everything.
And Apple's still here. Alsop was right.
