That does not make sense. Profits are calculated on corporate level not on a product level. How would you calculate the salary of Tim Cook in a iPhone profit figure, taking into account that he is responsible for Apple globally and not just for the iPhone?
Overall company profit margin quarter over quarter will tell you the story. you can shipping, selling as many as possible at lost, to gain market share, but that didn't last very long... just look at history of motorola and BB (however, chinese company if backed by gov could be a different story). apple current profit margin is >18%, BB -110%. for example... you might also get estimate from ifixit how much cost based on the teardown components cost plus MFG cost to get possible profit margin (max or min based on how much they sell vs committed volume with carrier for example... hard to find that kind of data).

I love this "no. 1" moniker the press throwing around like it means something. Tesla can never be no.1 for car. Rolex can never be no.1 for watch. And Levi can never be no.1 for jeans sold all over the world. So how is this moniker relevant again?
And btw none of you analogies to Tesla or Rolex are comparable.

Tesla has completely different goals to Apple - they want to change the industry while Apple wants to make a profit. Tesla just wants people to buy electric cars, no matter who makes them. And Apple is no lux brand like Rolex - it's phones are much the same as those sold by Samsung, you know, the #1 phone maker
