¡DVD Collection Inquiry!

I consider DVDs my generation's video format. I never got into building a VHS collection of movies because something about the format just did not appeal to me. Whether it was the degradation of quality factor, bulkiness of the tape, age of the format, moving parts, or even the lightweight, cheap plastic feel to it, I don't know. Maybe I just didn't earn enough money to blow it all on "videocassettes." But I do now- only on DVDs instead.

So my questions arise: 1) How does one go about acquiring a DVD collection? I have a few ideas about places to go like Amazon.com, but what places really have the best deals? Where does everyone buy their DVDs at the best prices? Thanks for you contributions to this thread, I would love to expand my collection beyond:

Y Tu Mama Tambien (Unrated)

Requiem for a Dream (Unrated)

Ameile

Citizen Kane

The Birth of a Nation

The Greate Escape

LOTR (gf's)

Serendipity (gf's)

Legally Blond (gf's)

    click on the etertainment--&gt;dvd category

    and search for the DVD you are looking to buy...

    usually about $20 off retail with box sets

    not sure about regular titles... usually I try and get a few at a time and find one retailer that I can get all of the titles at a decent cost to keep the shipping reasonable...

    my collection:

    Sopranos (1-3, going to make my own 4 )

    Godfather Trilogy

    24 (1)

    The Stanley Kubrick collection (the old one w/o eyes wide shut)

    Fight Club

    A Bronx Tale

    my brother just bought the Die Hard Trilogy for christmas... but he paid $70 ($75 w/tax) so I am going to return it and pay $50 from <a href="http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com"; target="_blank">www.deepdiscountdvd.com</a> (or something like that... it is on mysimon....

    and I never really got into tapes either... mainly because they were a pain in the ass to store... And it felt like the boxes were cheap...needless to say we have quite a collection of Disney Videos on VHS (they came in nice plastic cases <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> )

    Tapes = bad.

    DVD = good.

    Personally, my recommendation is to give careful consideration to both high quality films (Criterion Collection) and crap (bad comedies, horror films and whatnot.) After a while of building a "great" collection of films, you'll come to realize you don't watch CITIZEN KANE very often, even though it's one of the greatest films ever made. You'll probably watch PREDATOR or COMMANDO ten times as much.

    My only other advice is to keep your eyes on <a href="http://www.anchorbayentertainment.com/"; target="_blank">Anchor Bay</a>. They find some of the best great underground and bad films ever, and they do the best job they can with the quality of the transfer and of the DVD itself. Lots of great foreign horror films. Lots of great stuff.
