RDF is back
It's been a long time since I've watched a keynote where I've really been in awe afterwards. The iBook introduction at MWNY was amazing, the Power Mac G4 at Seybold was awesome, and the DP G4s, new iMacs, Pro Keyboard and Mouse at MWNY was very cool.
After those keynotes, I remember thinking why I buy Macs. But there were some keynotes recently that just didn't take with me. The last two MWNY shows didn't wow (especially with .mac), and while the FP iMac would have been enough at another show, Apple hyped last year's MWSF so much that I was expecting a lot more.
Even the introduction of the TiBook wasn't exciting a day later since Apple refused to exchange my Pismo or even fix it without charging me $1200. Don't even get me started on the iPod introduction (a great device but we all know what I was expecting).
But I see the new PowerBooks that were released yesterday with Airport Extreme, built in Bluetooth, a 1 GHz G4, the backlit keyboard, a new aluminum shell, a 17" screen, DDR memory, Firewire 800, a 60 GB HD and more, and I'm in awe.
For the first time since I bought my Pismo 3 years ago, I'm wishing for a new PowerBook. If I could scrape together $3000, I would have already ordered one.
It doesn't help that my Pismo is in need of repair (again) and that it's box from Apple came yesterday to send it away for a week or two, but all of the other PowerBook introductions had be shrugging my shoulders and thinking of how good my Pismo is. But this is the first computer in a long time that has made me want to upgrade.

Starbucks? There's only one even remotely close to me, and that's apparently only a small coffee stand in a bookstore so that's not even a real Starbucks. Actually, I can't even remember going into a Starbucks so why would I care.
BTW, I'm not saying I will get one by any means (I can't afford a new Mac right now). It's just a pain to not have my Pismo around.

No problem. They might be getting them soon because the front table in the Pro section where they usually have the PBs was empty except for one TiBook and an Airport base station.
Damn, I want that 12" PB even more now. I don't need both my kidneys, right? eBay, here I come!!

Great idea on Apple's part. Get people to forget out the lagging PowerMacs by having them look the other way.
I'm sure it's the main reason for the whole "Year of the Laptop" thing. But I made the decision that I would only buy a laptop 3 years ago. I could have purchased a G4 but opted for the PowerBook G3 instead because I could bring it wherever I went.
Even though my PowerBook is 'obsolete' by most standards, I would still choose to buy it again if I had to make the decision all over again.
My next computer is going to be another PowerBook, and while I thought my Pismo was still going strong, these new laptops are enough to get me interested in upgrading again.
