Anyone else get the feeling that this may be the last MacWorld?

Just, the way Jobs' worded things at times gave me that feeling.

examples are when he said he had 2 macworlds worth of announcements... thought it was a weird way to say it when Apple has expressed a desire to bail out on the summer one.

when talking about the retail stores he explicitly pointed out how foot traffic in december equalled so many macworlds... cant remember the number

and pointing out how many people were watching the stream and that the stores were showing it.

basically it just seemed to stress the point that Apple does not need macworld anymore to get publicity and to win customers and show off products.

Hmm... those are interesting points, for sure.

I don't know though, I can't see anything else they do creating a similar "buzz" in the market. The expos are expensive for them, but they get TONS of free coverage from almost everyone. It was a frenzy this time around, especially the last few days.

I would be very sad to see them stop the Macworlds... I just can't see it happening. (knock on wood)

I think they will continue to have them, when else is apple going to get the huge publicity? Just the auro that macworld gives off makes you want to be there. Seeing and using the new products first. I hope to go sometime.

Good observations, applenut, but I think you're reading too much into them. He's made that comment about the foot traffic in the Apple stores in other keynotes. If anything, though, the comment about the streaming seems to imply that he knows how big these shows are. I dunno. I personally hope that they don't stop them because I like having something to look forward to. Without the MW's what would there be?

its come to a point where apple can announce a special event at their campus, invite press, so many will come that there isnt an empty seat, and thousands will also watch on the web or in an apple store.

hell, why spend funds on macworld when thousands show up hours before jaguar's release at every apple retail store.

apple doesnt need macworld but macworld needs apple.... pretty simple... and if apple wants an east coast show to be in NYC they better get their way because they can just as easily bail out without being hurt much at all <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

I hope not, MacWorld is really a very great event and bring thousands of the Mac community together. No other event can do that!

This old song again? Get over it applenut. Just take the trip to Boston in 2004. It's not that far.

Don't forget the fact that IDG has offered Apple just about everything they could provide for no cost at all. Apple's not going to get the same type of coverage in the news for a special event in Cupertino as they are at a Macworld expo. Add in the fact that all of these other companies (besides Apple) still want to put their products out to the general public at these trades shows.

Macworld is good PR for Apple and all of the other companies who exhibit there as well. You see 60,000 Mac users all converging on one place just to see the latest and greatest in Mac hardware and software. This can't be replicated by Apple Stores or Quicktime Streams no matter how hard they try.

Dropping out of Macworld altogether, on the other hand, is nothing but bad PR for Apple, especially if they are going to cite the cost concerns of attending the shows. Then we'll be back to the old "Apple is dying, Apple is doomed" talk of years past since they can't even 'afford' to go to the show dedicated to them.

I see Apple going to New York this summer and San Francisco next winter. This won't be the end.
