A friend of mine has just got a PPC 601 free from a school. I was wanting to load it with the best OS version I could. I thought of 9.2.2 but I wonder if that is the best for the job or if the OS was too new and the machine too old. Anyone have suggestions??
Thanks
Ty

They are S L O W
why go to 9.1? its gonna be so sluggish and many of OS 9's features are wasted on it as a result.
go vintage... go with what shipped on it
well, I would reccomend 8.5.1 or 8.6
A caveat about 9.1 - unless you have a 9.1 CD, you can't use it. For some reason, the 9.0 -> 9.1 upgrade (free download from Apple) doesn't work on NuBus PowerMacs. So you can't upgrade a 6100, 7100, 8100, or 9150 to 9.1 from 9.0. 601-based PCI PowerMacs, like the 7200 and 7500, can use the upgrade. But avoid OS 9 anyway.
If you don't have 32 MB of RAM, use 8.1. If you're really brave, though, you can try putting system 7.1.2 on it. The first run of NuBus PowerMacs came with 7.1.2, a PPC-enabled version of 7.1. That is a free download if you go to http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2 . You an also try downloading system 7.5.3 and using that. It's not great, but it's free.
7.5.5...Ahh, the memories. Does anyone here remember the once-dreaded "Type 11" system error messages from days of old?
however, for the 601 based Macs, 7.6.1 is the sweet-spot OS wise.
