It's all Coming Together: How Apple might destory MS

Apple may have the power and opportunity to destory Microsoft, and after this last keynote, it's painfully obvious how.

Apple's only need for microsoft before was because they needed Office to help keep apple mainstream. Appleworks and Apple's other incomplete suite of "buisness" programs just weren't cutting it.

But now things are different.

Apple has released Keynote, a powerpoint killer, and Mail and Address Book are really maturing and becoming more and more powerful. Real Condenders, if not Champions to Outlook.

Also, Safari is out, although only a beta, it shows great potential, and as over half a million people have downloaded it already, in just one week, it shows people are more than willing to switch from IE. a very mediocre browser if you ask me.

So the only real contenders left from microsoft are Word and Excel right? Well last time I checked, Appleworks was due for a rather major update. I predict this will be a key annoucement for apple this year. If they get their pro-office app, Appleworks, together, and really "innovate" on it, they can leave the entire suite of microsoft products behind.

so while thats great, that doesn't exactly "Destroy microsoft.".

So what if apple released Mac OS X.2 for x86 processor based computers simultaneously? I remember this being a big rumor, that apple was supposedly working on. what if it's true, and they do release a Mac OS X for PCs? Would people even switch?

Let's face it. Very, Very few people like Microsoft. Not Apple, not apple users, not *nix users, not even windows users, and espescially not the DOJ. hell, even lots of people that work at MS don't like it. (It could be argued that Steve Ballmers love for microsoft makes up for the lack of love from millions of others. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> hehe, speaking of which, if anyone has any more steve ballmer videos, feel free to link to them here.)

therefore, I think there would be quite a few people out there willing to change their OS, and after that, that first generation of switchers would spread the good word, and spawn even more.

It would be an excellent chance for apple to increase their market share, and possibly even destory microsoft.

haha ur statement is funny cuz its tru, grab market share or backers, then attack, don't attack in hopes to gain the spoils

To increase market share, all Apple needs to do is convince all of the Matsu's of the world to switch..

...and then all Apple has to do is have computers that are twice as fast and cheaper than Dell!?!

apple makes most of its money from hardware. therefore: no osx on intel/amd.

and, if ms is in any imminent danger from apple [or anyone else] they would just buy em out, and gut em. ms' mkt cap&gt;$301Billion;apple's mkt cap&lt;$5.3Billion [according to yahoo]. therefore: ms has power to destroy apple at will.

Yup, they could if they really want to. MS is not doing much now becos that would only lead to more anti-thrusts cases.

It always amuses me to hear some people spout off about Apple as though it were any real competition to the "PC world". If Apple was ever going to be a contender it would have happened long before this. It's the kind of blind zealotry that gives all Mac users a bad rap. (Yes, I use a Mac for those in doubt.)

Free Clue: Most computer buyers don't even give Apple a *FIRST* thought, let alone a second one. It's a PC world - get used to it. Apple's gone from a high of 12% marketshare in the mid-nineties and steadily declined ever since to about 2% marketshare this last quarter (according to Ars's estimates). *Two percent*.

Do you actually think that these iApps, as nice as they are, will in any way impact on the long-entrenched MS Office standard? Even when Apple had a *clearly* superior OS they couldn't get marketshare.

Port MacOS to the PC world? Nice in theory, but fatally bad for reasons that have been beaten to death already.

On a more positive note I am glad that Apple is taking the initiative to try and rely less on MS Office and I expect that Apple can make some real headway here - but only on the Mac side.

I'm not going to get into why this won't work, it would take too long. So instead, I'm just going to talk about AppleWorks vs. Office.

    Could Apple challenge Word? Possibly.

But can Apple challenge Excel? I seriously doubt it. After all, it was spreadsheets that MS has been champion of since before Windows. Also remember that name recognition of these apps are key. Most people know what Office is. You won't ever get the same name recognition with AppleWorks (heck, more people know the name ClarisWorks).

I seriously doubt that Apple would ever endanger it's niche in the hardware market to go compete with the richest corporation on the planet. Microsoft last year spent nearly $2 Billion just on advertising for the Xbox. That's almost half of the money that Apple has in the bank! It's just not realistic.

Anyone consider the possibility that Apple really doesn't want to convert the other 95%?

Despite Jobs' desire to do so, I really think Apple would be happy with 10% but ideally at 20% of the market (and that's a long way to go).

This would be enough to attract developers, yet still allow Apple to charge the higher margins on their hardware. Let's face it, Apple will never compete with the Dell's and PC clones...nor should they. But charging a slight premium (still presently too high), over PC's will allow them to flourish and innovate.

Unfortunately not. I would say: let's face it, the typical Joe Blow likes M$ for opening up the computer world to the common man through its easy to use OS and software. Credit is not always given where credit is due.

For proof, look at the punishment doled out to M$, or rather the lack thereof. If most people truely detested M$ and truely thought that M$ was guilty of something, M$ would never have gotten off so easily.
